Ah, ok. it's in the detailed weeds of the laws. So here we are with MUST. No discretion. Remember refs can be sanctioned if they don't apply the laws. They are fulltime professionals and a sanction can result in a loss of earnings potentially. I thought the ref did extremely well to spot the kicking the ball away.Similarly the Pedro "must be a yellow" doesn't seem to qualify , as kicking the ball away needs to be after the ref has stopped play

Not particularly well worded as the comma implies that only provoking a confrontation needs to be after the ref has stopped.
But if purely for kicking the ball awy is a bookable offence, it would be under it's own bullet point (I think)
Any refs care toclarify the potential ambiguity?
So they agree that Rice did commit a yellow card offence then?I love the desperate way they're trying to draw parallels with the Pedro incident.
Brighton fans: "yeah he should have been booked too what's your point?"
"But..... but... but..... CoNsIsTeNcY WAAAAAAAAA"
So they agree that Rice did commit a yellow card offence then?
It’s not clear at all, as proved by the sheer weight of bullshit argument it’s created both pro and anti Rice, pro and anti Veltman, pro and anti Pedro, pro and anti referee, pro and anti media commentators….The rolling ball argument doesn't apply as Veltman didn't kick it while it was moving because Rice had flicked it away and stopped him doing so. Rice isn't unfortunate. He got a yellow card for delaying the restart. He admitted it afterwards and he knew the rules. Dermot Gallagher explained everything you have posted about very clearly on Sky RefWatch. Watch the clip and all becomes clear.
Rice committed an offence, Veltman just wanted to play football. Last I checked that wasn't against the rules/laws.It’s not clear at all, as proved by the sheer weight of bullshit argument it’s created both pro and anti Rice, pro and anti Veltman, pro and anti Pedro, pro and anti referee, pro and anti media commentators….
It’s ok to have a strong, uncompromising view. But as I said elsewhere on this forum (possibly even on this thread, I’ve lost track), if you’re going to support the strict-letter-of-the-law principle then you’d better apply that noble position from now on, including Albion players delaying a free kick in similar circumstances, not to mention throw-ins taken from exactly the right place, no time wasting, no feigning injury, no looking for free kicks and penalties… and so on.
This is what pisses me off - the hypocrisy of people getting on their high horse. FWIW I think either both players get yellow carded or (better) neither does, but they get a firm warning from the referee.
