I wonder if any survivors of a monumental tragedy like 9/11, or the tsunami, or the Chinese earthquake, take advantage of the situation and simply decide to go missing presumed dead.

i did see a programme about how they reckon there's loads of people on 9/11 that did it. found some bloke living in the mid-west who's family and kids thought he was dead n'all that...
