I literally can't remember the last time I had a good nights sleep. I always wake up more tired than I was was before going to bed.
Do You snore ?

If so it get your GP to arrange a sleep test for Obstructive Sleep Apnoea. Since i was diagnosed and given CPAP therapy i have felt much better.

Our secretary at work had chronic insomnia and she used something called Tryptophan which is available over the counter here in the States – not sure about the UK. Her doctor also diagnosed that she had hypoglycemia(low blood sugar) where one of the main symptoms is insomnia. She has changed her diet and now gets more sleep.

I would'nt like to say when the last time I had a proper nights sleep was, If I can stay asleep for 2 hours with out waking up then I class that as a success.

Do the make car stickers of your Avatar Bulldog(?) if not get printing

Great to find I'm not the only insomniac around here. My more recent sleep problems (and panic attacks) have been put down to my having an underactive thryoid, so see the doc and have that one checked out. Lately, though, I've been sleeping better, that is, getting to sleep within 5 minutes (rather than 5 hours) after reading a book in bed for a while. Trouble is, I still sleep for only 2 hours at a time, then wake up, so I have to try to get back to sleep again. Can't remember when I last slept thru the night. 15 years ago or so? I'd love to have 7 hours undisturbed kip, really would.

I must admit that last night, a work thing, certainly nothing to worry about, was the problem.
Sometimes it's something exciting at work that I'm thinking about that I'm looking forwards to. (Yes Mr J, it's true!).
It seems that if there's something that needs doing, until it's done, I think about it, usually when I'm trying to get to sleep.
I'm the same at with things I haven't done at home too.
If for example I've got a computer problem, I can't sleep until I've solved it.
I have stayed up nearly all night sometimes until I've finished something.
I certainly sleep well when I've finished something or solved the problem.

Not to be to trite but it certainly sounds like anxiety to me. Bit like OCD. Although I'm no specialist, there is a lot of good reading about it and resolving it with CBT. Worth a try!

You may well be right here.
A very close friend of mine has said to me more than once when I've told her about staying up half the night to solve something, that it seems a bit like OCD.

It wouldn't have anything to do with knowing that your Friday photographic trips will soon be coming to an end, and you have no plan what to replace them with?

now i'm no bible freak or have ever been into anything like this but if you are opened minded and have an ipod download his audio book.

going on holiday i always take a chance on an audio book and was so glad i did. i was having sleep problems due to work, past life problems and laying there awake just fliting between the two my mind would just goes into overdrive, and would not be able to sleep.
without going to much into it, the premise of the book is that you cannot change anything about the past, that has gone, done with. the future cannot be dealt with at that moment in time, so thats not worth worrying about.
basically clear you mind of everything at that moment in time and just think about 'now'.
when you listen to him he almost sounds hipnotic and some of his points of view kind of makes sense, but i suppose its what YOU take from it.

it sounded like a load of old bollocks when i first looked into it BUT it works for me when i cant sleep.

I've found that if I completely avoid alcohol I sleep really well. It takes around 10 days to work but then I have trouble getting out of bed in the morning and I'm 67yo.

I find this as well, Iif I don't drink in the week and by Thursday night I'm sleeping like a baby, but then I tend to ruin it by drinking on a Friday night.

I've been on mirtazapine for over a year now (a sleeping and anti-depressant drug) after I kept waking up several times a night for a long time. Now I sleep like a log. Also avoid caffeine at all costs.

Over the last couple of years, I have been having trouble sleeping.
It seems to happen for one or two nights, then I'm fine for a week or two, when it happens again.
I go to bed knackered, then after an hour or two of trying to get to sleep, I give up, go back down stairs, watch telly or surf the old internet for a couple of hours, have a cup of hot milk, go back to bed and sleep like a log.
Is it an age thing?
It is getting more frequent as time goes by.
I won't see 50 again!

Good cure is to have a relaxing bath, not a showerr. before bed and put a few drops of Arnica lotion in it. That's how I coped a while back.

Arnica is though a mild narcotic and you shouldn't do anything else before sleep involving concentration, except I should imagine a horizontal workout would be okay...

You can get arnica in some chemists, a firm called Weleda make it.

I've found that when trying to get back to sleep after waking, count backwards from 300, very slowly, picturing the number in your mind. I've never counted down to 1 (rarely below 200) and you often start to get muddled with where you are numbers wise - don't think too hard, just try and pick up with the last number you can remember for sure and continue counting down again. It really works for me!

The main problem I have over the past year or so (I'm 51 now) is night cramps, being woken up by excruciating cramping pains in my feet, calves etc. I usually have to leap out of bed and stand and walk about. That makes you really angry I can tell you! Especially as it can happen 2 or 3 times a night sometimes...

Works a treat..
