Two die as gunman goes on shopping mall rampage

TWO people were killed and at least two others were wounded during a shooting rampage at a shopping mall in the United States yesterday.

There were conflicting reports about whether the gunman - armed with an AK-47 assault rifle - was among the dead or was in custody after the attack.

Police confirmed there were "multiple shootings" at the upmarket Ward Parkway complex in Kansas City, Missouri.

Joe Vitale, a fire department battalion chief who was at the scene, said: "We have at least two fatalities, maybe more."

According to local media reports, the suspect shot a police officer in the arm during a traffic check and then drove to the shopping centre where he opened fire.

Police were notified at around 4pm local time that a man was firing shots in the mall and that several people had been hit.

One eyewitness described how he heard three or four shots near the checkout aisles of a department store.

Aaron Washington, 34, who works at the mall, said he was coming back from lunch when he heard gunshots, and saw one man holding his eye.

"The man had apparently been shot," Mr Washington said.

Authorities evacuated a cinema in the complex and surrounding streets also closed.

just shows it could be anyone at anytime and motifs could be anything.

scary that purchase of fire arms is open to pretty much anyone. there needs to be some restrictions as to who can buy any, or not allow any at all for public use - it will stop weirdos doing such things in the future

I think this is the likely motif ;)

"Only two" people killed this time though. So it's not as bad...

OK.. a shooting in America.. WOW! Now go find another story of shootings in other countries that happened around the same time, this infatuation with the USA and the holier than thou attitude we have towards them is starting to piss me off to be honest.

Good point...the USA is supposed to be the world's biggest superpower and the self styled "best country in the world".

And your point is ? A death is a death whereever it is. The US has it's issues but you may have noticed there's been a fair few deaths in the London area where teenagers have been killing each other. Nobody condones the situation but the US has its own unique circumstances as does Iraq and everywhere else. Granted the Virginia Tech attrocity was one thing but multiple homicides are not a US preserve.

Sorry, should've ended by saying a life is a life wherever it is lost, unfortunately greater priority is given to a life lost in the USA than in Iraq.

Yet another car bomb in Iraq? Ten casualties? This probably makes page 5 in the paper. That's just wrong.

Interesting point raised in The New Yorker last week -- although the US has had 'only' half the mass shootings in the last twenty five years outside of terrorist/political stuff -- no other country has had two.

After -- take your pick -- Dunblane, Port Arthur, Aramoana, e.g. -- sane countries do something definitive, and there's no repeat. They're not annual occurrences.

One definition of a madman is someone who does the same thing over and over, expecting a different result each time.
