the OP is odd, balckberry dont charge you at all for the interent as far as im aware, your network provider does. the plans im looking at, if youre willing to pay somthing for the phone and dont make alot of calls, you can get under £20 per month from all networks including bandwidth. eg, Tmobile does £15 for 2GB, lowish (300?) minutes and you'd pay 250 for the Samsung S2 or less for a HTC Desire.

should be noted Orange/Tmobile have the best 3G network for general coverage, though others might be better in particular spots.

Just ensure 'Background data' is always, ALWAYS switched off except when you actually want to use it (ie when downloading apps).

It is the single biggest "idle" drain on the battery. If you leave it activated all the time, your battery will be shot to shit.

...but I want 'Background data' left on so that I can be notified of emails.

It's a pity you can't set 'Background data' off on an app-by-app basis. Hence I'm careful what apps I install.
