"Hello pop pickers" on a Sunday followed by the Top 20 is one of my most vivid memories of music and radio as a child. Another legend of my youth dies

RIP

Yep, definitely a part of our music establishment. Doing the charts, he obviously had no say in the playlist. He did seem to lend a little favourable tone when playing the better tunes though.
A master of the cheesy bingo-hall-speak style of disc-jockery, his wide-awake tones were perfect for his work.

Before the great Fluff gets idly lumped in with DLT/Tony Blackburn/Simes "dinosaurs", the lot that were shoved aside for having massive egos and replaced by shrinking violets like Chris Evans and Chris Moyles - Fluff had a very funny line in self-deprecation. That Harry Enfield old gits sketch with them all in an OAP home was brilliant "at number two - it's VALIUM and I'm on 10 a day - ALL RIGHT?!"
