Adding to the atmosphere at Falmer

On around page 300 of Edna's brilliant "We don't want goal music at Falmer" thread, Attila mentions that there will be some sort of committee to help identify activities that will add to the atmosphere. There's a very strong anti-goal music feeling on NSC, so it got me thinking, what would help add to the atmosphere at Falmer (One Gus Poyet has already suggested "winning" would help - so that's on the list already)?

Any ideas?

Everyone being as loud singing wise as they are at away games rather than just sitting there at Withers like most do? No excuses once we've got the roof...

Think the North stand will be particularly loud and will eventually be recognised nationally as a very loud stand - hopefully a loud ground if others pull their fingers out.

As long as everyone who wants to sing gets themselves in the North Stand then it'll be packed & rocking and the atmosphere will spread to the rest of the ground.

What options are there? I can think of drums and bands...none are desirable to me though. I also wonder why we need to bother forcing an atmosphere. I mean, if the crowd want one then they'll create one...if they dont then they wont. The crowd/supporters have direct control and choice over this.

I can't think of any activity that can be implemented to create a great atmosphere other than a team playing good football and winning matches. It doesn't matter how many balloons you have, how much music is played, how many cheerleaders prance, how many fireworks are let off, how many "letsbeavinya" speeches are given, how many buns are hurled...the one thing that can REALLY get a stadium rocking is the team. Or a shit ref.

Anything else is just manufactured pap.

Agreed. I'd just like to see a tacit acknowledgment that football crowds are NOT an androgenous (sp) mass of indentikit humans and that we're all different with different expectations of what we want from the 'matchday experience'.

For example I think we're all agreed that it will be brilliant that there will be a proper Family Stand. This can be a complete zero-tolerance area with no swearing, indeed if you even stand up and shout "COME ON ALBION!" at the top of your voice you should be escorted out as it might frighten some little kids. Those people with young families (and even stuck-up, toffee-nosed cissy snobs like Ninja Elephant) can happily sit in that stand and wave their foam fingers and cuddly seagulls to their hearts' content knowing that they will never be exposed to the seamier, grittier side of football fandom.

On the other hand there should be an area where if you're NOT standing up, swearing you balls off and shouting "COME ON ALBION" at the top of your voice then you should be escorted outn. And yes I know all about the rules on standing, but as has been proved time and time again at grounds up and down the country if enough people do it then it IS tolerated.

I agree with this! And safe standing areas and beer available to drink on the terrace would help! But we ain't going to get that, I just thought I'd let people know what the club are planning. A winning team, exciting football and sensitive stewarding are the key. Obviously.

Tolerate standing in the back half of certain stands and make it clear to people. So if you want to stand you buy a ticket in the back half, if you don't front half. Obviously no standing in the family stand, so basically just allow standing towards the back of the North Stand, South East, and lower and top tier in the West.

There is a HUGE correlation between the atmosphere at a ground where standing is "tolerated" and the noise that people generate. The club have to take a different approach to the current one on this, following other clubs where this is done. Forget the falseness of drums, horns etc, if this is done the atmosphere will look after itself.

IMHO, atmosphere evolves from the fans - isn't applied by the club. Of course winning makes a difference (although check out some top prem clubs for how even this erodes over time). Celery used to cause a lot of hilarity - but that didn't come from the club. I like flags personally, but not if I'm behind one and they will never be allowed at Falmer I would suspect.

No need for an atmosphere committee really.

Hangings of criminals at half time!

Something I have wanted for a long time is to see criminals paraded at half time to be roundly hissed/booed etc. Perhaps throwing of fruit could be encouraged? I would probably stop short of the hanging bit but each to their own.
