They could, and they probably will. No, it's not legal, because your ISP will know who you are (all to do with IP addresses, too complicated to get into here). Tell your grandchildren that Grandad is too old to go to prison for non-payment of fines, and get them to do it at home instead!

Are you likely to get summonsed from downloading a couple of CD's a month from them or are you less likely if you use Limewire.

If they are based in Russia what powers do UK authorities have to get info of theer customers from them, or is it possible that info come from your ISP

They could get if from your ISP. However, right now, they can't be bothered, they would have an interesting time in court over the legality of listening to an "out of region radio station" if they did, for one thing.

Far less chance of being caught; at the moment anyway.

My son got caught last year. He was sent a demand for £2,500 from the BPI. Eventually, we settled out of court for £1,700. Seems I made the right choice. He go caught sharing 2,000 tracks....take my advice, don't do it and if you have to, do it in moderation!

I prefer "don't do it at all" but I have trouble getting the boys to stop, then found limewire on my PC after one of their friends stayed over for a couple of days! I doubt that's going to be much of a defence.

You could block the ports in use on your firewall, which would make it either unbearably slow or totally unusable.

I have opted for banning their friend from coming round! Barbaric but safe and at least the PC rmains useable.

no, just move them all to another folder. as soon as you download something take it out of the shared folder. that way it doesn't slow you down either.

This is commonly referred to as "Leeching" in the file sharing community!

I used to try that little trick on Soulseek and got banned left, right and centre by other users.

Where is the shared folder? Is it the top part of the bit torrent downloader?

Should be in 'Options' or whatever its called on the program you use. I use Bittorrents to download albums and Limewire for individual tracks. I only use it for one or two albums every now and then and always moved it from the shared folder when its finished. I would download movies and series' of tv shows but I dont like the idea of downloading a few gb in one go for this very reason. Even though there is probably little chance of getting caught.

If you have limewire, then I thought the idea of file sharing is that you download to a shared directory, and then the person on the other end can access this and upload.

Surely if you move the directory to a "non shared" location then you are not participating in the shared p2p netword, therefore you can be done.

Or am I wide of the mark?

I download stuff I've heard snippets off. If I like it I'll go out and buy the Album. Moving it out of the shared folder seems a bit pannicky and goes against the whole point of p2p.

I spoke to a BPI person about this a few months ago and they said they'd be going after everyone who'd been involved, even those who'd only shared 100 or so tracks.

But, it was the uploaders they were more worried about, so if you've only downloaded a 100 or so, you'll probably be fine.

Downloading is getting tracks off other people.
Uploading is allowing other people to get them off you.

OK, understand comments about filesharing but what is your view on people who download films from news servers and don't share.

You have to pay a fee to use the news servers and people post films which are downloadable, typically they have just been released on DVD (so have been copied and uploaded) sometimes they are still on at the cinemas.

Recognising that somebody is doing something they shouldn't be,

how likely are they to go after downloaders and would they be less concerned if you dont share?
