Oh jeez, where's the smiley that makes a thud?

Er, no, I was being deadly serious.

How about NO promotion, NO relegation, NO divisions and NO Leagues? Every club in the country is entered into one sodding great tournament. What you do is each week you play the team immediately above you, alternating home and away. The more you win the higher you go (and thus meet stronger teams) and the more you lose the lower you drop. Then whoever's top of the pile at the end of may is declared the champions and gets a trophy. Then in August you start again in the same positon that you were in at the end of the previous season.

We'd just end up playing Carlisle and Blackpool 20 times a season

What would make it a level playing field again would be to:

Bring back a limit on foreign imports. 5 foreigners in a starting line-up 10 in a squad. After 5 years of playing in England the foreign player loses foreign status though.

Transfer cap, for a season. Something like £25 million to be spread over both windows.

Problem with that is defining 'foreigners' as under European Law it is illegal to stop a man, from an EU country, earning a living so any player from an EU country would be entitled to earn a living and play in this country irrespectiove of any rules that football authorities make.

You have four divisions called 1,2,3 and four.

The winners of 1 are the Champions, and the bottom 2 are relegated.

2 go up from 2,and 2 go down.

2 go up from 3 and 4 go down.

4 go up from 4,and 4 apply for re-election.

Conference winner may also apply for election to Division 4.

No foreign players are allowed, and no foreign owners either.

There may be a case for regionalising Divs 3 and 4 into 3(S) and 3(N),in which case only the winners of those leagues will be promoted, and the bottom 2 teams in each apply for re-election.

All clubs to be allowed terraces, and stands with a roof on.

The European Cup to be for winners of national top div winners only, and be knockout, and have no seedings in the draw.

The Cup Winners Cup to be reinstated as just that, and run on the same basis as the EC.

An Inter Cities cup to be considered for teams finishing 2nd and 3rd in their national top division, and be run as EC.

Television coverage to be reduced to one live game per week with no team appearing more than twice in home games and no team appearing more than three times in any season.Highlights programmes to be shown on Saturday evenings with no repeats of those programmes.

All weekend games to Kick Off at 3 p m on Saturday only.

Midweek games Tue/Wed at 7.45 p m.

Also NO foreign managers of League teams, and certainly not of the National team.

Players going abroad to play not to be selected for national team, and not allowed directly back into division 1.

SORTED.

the only ??? problem with that is that if every team is to play the team above them, then sure the team above will be playing the team above them?
