Stop the beer duty escalator

Every year, the beer tax escalator increases the tax on beer by 2% above the rate of inflation, thus adding considerably more pressure on the British pub, the cornerstone of many of our communities. Removing the beer duty escalator at the next budget will help keep beer more affordable and go a long way to supporting the institution that is – the great British pub.

Going to the pub is a core British tradition and so is enjoying great beer. If you want to continue enjoying your fresh pint in your local pub then it’s crucial that you support our campaign to grind the beer duty tax escalator to a halt.
If we don’t show our support for the great British pub, we risk losing more pubs and more jobs within our local communities.

( IMHO ) It's not the beer tax escalator that's killing pubs - it's the greed of the brewries. Some pubs manage to serve beer at a decent price, as do many offies ( who tend to be cheaper than supermarkets ) - all of these are also covered by the beer tax as well.

As an ex publican, you are spot on. But it's a mixture of many things, and beer tax is one of them. I would welcome any change that is going to help the pub trade. But your damn right about one thing - companies like Enterprise and Greene King should NEVER be allowed to do what they do. It's legalized extortion.

I've now altered my post to actually make sense as the very reasonably priced beer I brought from the Offie earlier ( also covered by the beer tax escalator ) made me type badly

The government really need to realise that a quick fix to Britain's current alcohol problems is getting people back into the pubs.

They have effectively priced us out of going to the pub and so encouraging people to drink at home instead. This promotes all kinds of drink related problems such as habitual drinking or alcoholism, domestic violence and drink related accidents as the drinkers are unsupervised.

They need to level out the prices so that going to the pub is nearly as affordable as buying a pack of Stellas from a supermarket. They need to appreciate that pubs are a safe & supervised drink related environment where peoples negative drink habits are regulated by the community.

The problem is that people talk to each other in pubs. Pubs are a hub of the community. Therefore they must be destroyed.

yep definately needs to stop. and the tax should be reduced for on sales, in the pubs etc. the current situation is bonkers with cheap drink at the supermarket. there needs to be a new inquiry to the brewies and pub co's too, or if that will take too long (and end in another fudge) maybe have an additional tax cut for independent pubs.
