What they have done is got two civilisations, The Mayan and The Sumerians. The Mayan calender end on the 20/12/2012. Although some say this is true early or that it has past already. Truth is, we just don't know. The idea because the Mayan calender ends of the 21/12/2012 does not mean the end of the world. It is, pretty amasing that a civilisation could predict the end of the world, but not of their own civilisation.

I watched a program on Discovery the othe week about the Mayans. Very interesting, it's all based on astrology, basically in 2012 the earth is going to pass through the dark area in the centre of the galaxy and the Mayans (and a few others including nostradamus) believe that this is going to be a bad period for civilisation, but not necessarily the end. The way things are going the could be right, there's plenty of disasters waiting to happen at the moment, war, disease, famine - take your pick.
