Belgium 1990?
Ranked 18th in the world at the time. Not a big beast at that point. On occasion we've done the likes of Denmark, Colombia, Senegal, Cameroon, Ukraine, Paraguay, Sweden, Ecuador but that's about it.

Ok, I don't know your rules. Could you then provide the rankings of all the teams that you've listed as beating us, at the time we played them.

Portugal were ranked 18th in 2003 and 17th in 2004, so you'd have dismissed them if we won against them in Portugal in 2004.

And croatia were ranked 20th in June 2018. So you're OP is inaccurate.

Portugal were ranked 18th in 2003, so you'd probably have dismissed them if we won against them in Portugal in 2004
Portugal were ranked 5th in the world in June 2004 and we lost, so I don't know what you are talking about.

I'm talking about big teams at the time, genuine contenders for the trophy.

They were a big team at the time, they reached the WC Final!

This says they were 18th in Nov 2003

And this they were ranked 17th in March 2004

And this says they were ranked 20th in May 2004

When teams have beat us, you count them as a big team, and when we beat them you say they weren't ranked high enough, despite the fact that they were ranked higher than some teams you've claimed counted when they beat us.

Cheers Pav. Do you do kids parties as well?
I just thought it was kind of relevant to point out - in my reckoning - if we beat the Dutch then it would be our biggest - and FIRST ever - knockout win against a big contender nation on foreign soil.

I realise now it was foolish of me to have embarked on this thread without providing FIFA World Rankings at the date of each match, as the matter is entirely subjective.

Just far enough away from LDC
Under southgate we haven't beaten a team ranked above us in a competitive match.

Netherlands and Spain are both currently ranked below us

No, you're making up daft rules. They only reached the final because they beat us, but if we'd beaten them you'd have said it didn't count as they weren't a big team.

Just out of interest - how many times have we played a team ranked above us in a competitive match under Southgate?

Portugal were not 5th in the world in June 2004

1. They were hosts and expected to do well.

2. They did do well, they got to the final and threw it away vs Greece having beaten Spain, us and the Dutch en route. WC s/f 2 years later

3. They were 5th at the year end http://www.rankfootball.com/men-2004.html

4. Ergo, they were a big team at the time of the game.
