I can fully understand that, but there does come a point where it's simply an asset. Unless you have an equally keen son/daughter/family member....what's going to happen to it?
Obviously, it's an age-related decision. but I don't want my o/h to be faced with the "what to do with all this?" question.
Also, it seems from @Mellotron's post that the potential funds could enhance his/her life in another way.
If so, why not?
My vinyl and CD collection gives me huge pleasure, and I still enjoy adding to it. What ultimately happens to it, I presume you mean when I die, I’m not really bothered about. It will pass onto someone and they can either try and flog it or sling it.

Fair point, although if you had a potential plan for doing something else, and that collection could make it reality? Horses for courses, obvs,

I grew up with vinyl in the house as my dad was an international record dealer selling to clients all over the world. He passed suddenly when I was 17 leaving approx 5000 vinyl albums and 2000 CD’s. Sold the lot to another dealer who knew him but wish now I’d kept some of them. Nearly 30 years have passed now and I’m tempted to buy myself a decent turntable and get back into it.

It would be amazing to get discogs valuations, but I fear that is a fantasy. It reckons my collection could reach £45,000
Discogs values are calculated based on previously sold items. They don't show which items have held their value and which haven't. They will not give any value at all to an item that has no sales history on Discogs. They also don't take postage costs into account and a lot of sellers seem to be offering at cheaper rates and making it up on the shipping. The high end for my collection currently shows at just over £69k, but you can definitely take that figure with a pinch of salt. I have a huge number of CDs and a world in which most CDs get anywhere near what they may have sold for before streaming allowed me to hoover them up for next to nothing is not returning any time soon.

You also have to drill down and look at the circumstances of sales. I've a U2 single that has been sold often, always for about 4 quid, but sold once for £800. If you look at the circumstances of that sale you find out that it was signed and previously sold at auction with a certificate of authenticity, so distorts the expected value of everyone else's copies. The median figures are probably a better guide, but if you're looking at selling, I would guess that it's probably most useful just as a guide to which items you might want to pick out and sell individually before flogging the rest in bulk. I've no plans to sell anything, but that information might be useful to the family if anything happened to me. The real reason I listed mine was to give myself an easily accessed list of what I own, so that I stopped buying duplicates.

10 years on, I'm resurrecting this thread to ask the following question;

"Has anyone had success selling a medium-large collection of vinyl, where it isn't just an all old classical/50p a record type collection?"

I have a collection that according to Discogs (I know, I know...) is worth anywhere between 4-11k. I would consider selling all/most of it for a reasonable offer (I have a need to raise cash for a potentially exciting venture/career opportunity) but I recognise that could be really difficult.

Anyone had any luck/experiences?
Not that helpful to your specific question about selling in bulk, but here's my recent experience at any rate.

I've had some success on Ebay selling some of my higher value stuff that I no longer wanted, after deciding a good few months back to sell my entire collection. I've also moved on some of the cheaper stuff in small batches to record shops.

If you want the best money you can get, then I'm afraid you have to list individually and be patient. I prefer Ebay to discogs for selling, as I like to show photos so buyers can easily see exactly what they're getting. Selling to a record shop, or dealer, will only net you about a third of it's value (compared to selling elsewhere individually).

For me, having decided to sell my entire collection, slowly, as I rip it to digital (since I've got heavily into DAP's and headphones), I've now back tracked a fair bit. I've not regretted anything I've sold so far really, but I've now realised that possibly a good 50% of my collection will be keepers.

In light of this, I've bought 500 clear polythene outers and 500 anti static polylined inners to get me started, and am now working through cleaning up and preserving properly all my keepers, after my collection had got a bit neglected. I'm really enjoying the process and the feel of vinyl again as a result, even if it's no longer my main source of listening.

Good luck with whatever you decide, regarding selling. I've bought two nice sets of headphones from the proceeds of what I've sold so far, and that's brought so much more enjoyment than rarely played vinyl that's sat there for years gathering dust.

It's impossible to value . . .I have albums and singles that are rare and relatively valueless, also some worth hundreds . . . . . I filtered out nearly 200 a few years ago as it seemed they were more library pieces than music I regualrly listened to, and its all readily available pretty much everywhere.

accumulating is easy, selling less so . . . Individually we may have 10-50k worth according to whatever reference , but a dealer will skip the valuable item's, as if he didn't see them, generalise and give you half value on a weapons grade collection, say £5 each . . .if you're lucky . . . .

I suppose I have been lucky with a few of my acquisitions . . . Or bought them when they were car boot cheap!

Still got all my original vinyl from the 70's & 80's. Been adding to it the last few years since I discovered https://jumpuprecords.com/ Probably bought over 100 albums now. If you like SKA & Reggae this is the site for you. Great to deal with and I have discovered some cracking bands I'd never heard of. They are great to deal with and shipping from the US is pretty cheap. They often have some great deals if you buy a bundle of albums.

Huge vinyl lover here! Been growing it since around 2013 and now have about 150 in my collection.

What I would say, is getting an offer for all of them will be almost impossible, just like you, no one wants to filter through the crap. Discogs indeed is a bit of a fantasy and can take some time to sell, as is a lot of the vinyl places as everyone knows the value of them now.

What I would say though about Discogs, find out the most desired one and you'll make a sale. For the rest, some other sites may buy them but also creating bulk deals at record fairs seems to work a trick for people.

This website is pretty good for tracking actual sold vinyls: https://www.valueyourmusic.com

it does seem fantasy land at times. I use it purely to remember what I’ve got in my collection; I have a few duplicates from my pre-Discogs says.

With CDs I've got a few from my post Discog days. Sometimes I haven't even checked because I've been so sure I don't have it.

I love nothing better than filtering through the crap. When I first started collecting records I mainly collected singles, and back in the late eighties, I had an unexpected afternoon off work and stopped off at a record shop on the way to get the train home. The bloke was getting rid of his huge stock of 7"s and I was in there for hours on the floor going through cardboard boxes. One of my most enjoyable afternoons ever and, I went home with four or five carrier bags full. If memory serves I picked up something like 250 singles for around twenty quid. (about 8p each). That was back when I actually had some quality control and narrower music tastes, so I occasionally think back to how many I rejected that day that I would have taken home now.

Might be worth having some of it valued if you have a decent size collection. I had my collection valued by an independent valuer last year at close to £100k (I have a lot and many originals signed by the likes of Zep and the Stones).

Can be worth more than you think.

hmmm interesting..

I have thousands of cds and vinyl albums and singles, some quite valuable believe it or not, they stored in genres through from blues, country, rockabilly, surf, garage, psychobilly, ska, and indie.
The most valuable are stored on a separate shelf and are for my daughter when I kick the bucket, luckily she has an open ear and likes some of them, especially the early Cramps and Smiths stuff, she can sell what she does not want, and knows the value of them.

I have a little pact with some of my friends and we have all done something similar that if and when we go the remainder rather than end up at the Sally Army and sold for 50p we can take what we want at the wake.

What a great idea. Maybe even have some decks at the wake so spin the vinyl on?

I think Discogs does a median valuation & doesn't account for 'fashion'. As an example my Jnr is massively into early 90's rave stuff. He's lucky as his Dad kept most of his rave vinyl & 'lent' it to him, along with his decks. Mine are staying in the lounge as I'm mean & he can have one when I die & his brother can have the other one (it's the only thing I have of value 😂 ).
Now all of us ravers are getting nostalgic & are going through our midlife crisis we want the ones that we gave to a charity shop years ago, back (same with turntables)! As a consequence of this, a record that was £4 on Discogs 3 years ago is now £100! Because of current 'fashion', some of the records his Dad 'lent' him are listed as £150 on Discogs. Current 'fashion' has led to a DJ, producer & label owner, opening up a vinyl shop in Worthing that specifically caters to us old ravers who want vinyl. I don't actually want it but taking Jnr to the store opening cost me over £100!!!
Incidentally if anyone has an audio cassette player they don't want, I'm on the lookout as his Dad also gave him his old rave 'tape packs'. Also a VHS player as he gave him videos on the same theme. My audio cassette player worked last year but doesn't appear to now. The VHS player went when it chewed up Big Foot & The Henderson's, that was unforgivable! I do still have all my audio & video tapes.
I sound like a hoarder for keeping vinyl, tapes & CD's whilst everyone else was chucking them away but I just can't bring myself to throw away 'music'.
