Yeah like I've mentioned in the thread about Evan, we're using our striker a lot different now than before. Rather than waiting for the team to move up and then find the best space in the penalty box to make the most of our possession, our striker is now supposed to start off from central midfield area and get the ball when running towards their goal. Something he as a big lad probably haven't done too much in his youth football days.
On the other hand, if you've got a natural goal-scorer, big, strong, good at leading the line, why not adapt the play to get the best out of one your (potentially) best assets?

I think we kind of did last season, but its really difficult to play like that these days. You have to complicate things a little for your no 9 to get any sort of space or he'll just disappear as teams are very good at defensive transitions these days. It just becomes too crowded and too fine margins to look for the perfect cross or perfect cutback pass. You kind of wanted players to be moving, not to be stationary in the box.

I have a really poor memory for individual matches (other than the obvious ones), but I remember this as if it was yesterday

This is the big reason why Welbeck is a 6-7 a season man. His link up play is superb - really good. The movement and dropping deep to allow the wingers to overload is top level. But his movement in the box is just so basic. He never seems to deviate his runs, he just sort of stands there. From what I’ve seen of Ferguson so far, his movement in the box is much more threatening, but he can’t do what Welbeck does in holding the ball up and bringing other players forward

Strong line up - all will play Premier league matches this season - shows the strength in depth we now have and shows we are taking this competition seriously by not playing a load of PL2 players - big 👍from me

Did we? Really? I thought it was more switching from wing to wing - or back to the CB or GK, with the aim of eventually walking the ball into the net.

Big match for Moder.

Hope he smashes it.
He’s a bit of a Jonah though isn’t he? His win/loss record for us was posted a while back and it wasn’t pretty reading - even in games where he played well. And he has Gilmour levels of finishing.

Bloody quick though, deceptively so.
