DC Confidential, the memoirs of Christopher Meyer, the UK ambassador to the US during the last Labour government.

There's one brilliant phrase in it. He describes Blair and Brown as having made a Faustian pact "but it wasn't clear which one was Faust and which one was Mephistopheles". That's excellent; I'm going to pinch that

"The Death of Bunny Munro" by Nick Cave.

Like Peter James' Roy Grace books it's set in Brighton... ..but that's about as far as the similarities go.

Also like the Roy Grace books it's been made into a TV series

After you posted this a few months back, I read up on "The Roads to Sata" and decided to buy it. Its been sat in my "to read" pile until last week. I finished it last night and I absolutely love this book. Thanks for posting on here, because I wouldn't have come across it otherwise. I thoroughly recommend it to anyone with an interest in travel writing, Japan or just looking for something gentle/interesting to read.

They are paranormal thrillers set in Manchester. Don’t let the paranormal bit put you off if it isn’t your thing thought. There is the dark humour of his other books throughout.
