…..whatever concerns any of us may have/have had re this new manager, or any new manager, if you haven’t decided to give the guy a go, give him your support and get behind the club/TB/PB’s decision and back your team by now, at what point do you? O'Riley and Gilmour are two completely different types of midfielder.
Gilmour leaving simply means we have one less defensive midfielder option sitting in front of the defence. Matt Riley is never going to do that job. If you look at their heat maps there is barely any overlap in the spaces they operate in.
What is more relevant is whether Hurzeler thinks that Yasin Ayari or Malick Yalcouye can replace his position in the squad and be as effective.

This is my query. I dont really see any of the rumoured incomings as a direct replacement for Gilmour in terms of the type of midfielder. Maybe Hurzeler see's less use for Gilmour in his desired formation/tactics, but if you're looking for an ideal candidate to play a deeper role alongside Wieffer then that is not O'riley, Gruda, or Rutter. They're all much more attacking. In terms of deeper centre mids we'd be left with Baleba, Milner, or possible Ayari or Hinshelwood to partner Wieffer, and i'd put Gilmour ahead of them in ability.
My guess is that he rates Ayari, based on the fact he came on at Everton.

Yes Ayari got minutes v Everton, but once Rutter, O'Riley, Gruda and Enciso are all up to speed, will he still?
I'm not convinced, unfortunately. Although he has looked very promising, the biggest spend in reinforcements is in the area he currently occupies.
They are all midfielders but I'm not sure 3 of those 4 are defensive midfielders. (I don't know about Gruda)

Five of the six managers Bloom has appointed were unproven in England at the level they were appointed. One failed, and that led to the 'safe' appointment of Hughton to keep us up. Fab could fail, and that may lead to a similar 'safe' appointment, although I think it would be really hard to properly 'fail' with the players at his disposal. Hyypia was dealt a bum hand with the recruitment that year.
In many ways the recruitment splurge is insurance against the rookie manager being rubbish, even if he is bad the players are good enough to keep us up, and then we go again. Imagine if he was bad AND the team wasn't that good. That would be a disaster.

Don’t think this is a reflection of WBG’s quality but just a round peg in a square hole situation.
Good of the club to let Billy move to a club where he will play as he is too good to be a bit part bench player at any level.

He was certainly played high up the pitch against Everton.
That’s very odd messaging, it’s pretty clear he’s away to Napoli now. I get that he isn’t going to confirm news but I’d have an expected more along the lines of deferring to Barbar or that his future is still in discussion with the club.
I don’t really believe he thinks Gilmour will be here at the end of the window, I’d be surprised if anyone believed him.
