"Happenings in Hangleton" sounds like a prime candidate to get overun by people somehow turning a light hearted comment about some nice community event into a massive argument about immigration and how the country's going to the dogs. :lolol:
I run a page for a local area and all posts have to go through admin. It's quite a sane and helpful place. The strict 'no dickheads' policy increases traffic which is unsurprising.

It's a summary of society really. Most folks really do want to talk about nice things or be reasonable online. But if your knee is cut open it's the blood that folk see most, not the rest of your body being fine.

Our neighbourhood page has recently been updated to allow the OP to be anonymous (mods can still see) and it’s basically been used as a campaign for vengeance on various neighbourly disputes, such as who’s letting fireworks off at 10pm and x address kids are playing with a ball near my car. It’s a real insight into these peoples lives

That doesn't really surprise me. The threads on here that get dominated by nonsense all end up with the same 5 or so people posting on them.

I am finally considering coming off X. It's a cesspit.
I think I've got to the point of binning the lot off.

Facebook was useful for open water swimming but I've knackered my shoulder so it's purpose has gone. It's now like a needy child as it constantly asks me if I like the content it pushes and every single time I don't and don't get me started on the attention seeking school mums.

I'm not bothered about the far right stuff on twitter - it's easily avoided - but I am bothered that all the people I used to knock about with on twitter seem to have gone. See how we go when the season starts but It now seems to be down to 3 of us who are degenerate gamblers.

I've never really got into Instagram or Snapchat (I guess as my 16 has, I'm not supposed to) and that just leaves here. Whilst I'm sure, I'll still be around here for the foreseeable and more, it feels a lot more serious than it used to be. Perhaps it's just me or the passage of time but the internet is nowhere near as much fun as it used to.

I recommend it.

I came off Twitter about four years ago and it was a complete relief. Once I'd weaned myself off needing the instant news/comment thing, I realised how much of a negative impact on my life it was having. I used it a LOT as my main interests of football, cricket, politics and music were well served on there but there's far too much anger and nastiness, I just felt myself being angry and argumentative and needing to voice an unnecessary opinion in the 'real world' because of it. I do not miss it!

My other half noticed a positive difference in me within days of coming off it! She seems to have forgotten about that now and back to not liking me again though!

I get a very real sense of this, too. I guess there are a combination of factors but so far as NSC is concerned, I believe @hart's shirt pretty much nailed it for me when he posted this critique last night:

"Occasionally I feel certain threads should have suggested maximum daily posting limits for users to protect themselves and others, and for NSC unity.

It's usually where there's more heat than light generated, a lack of civility shown to other contributors, or where a few monopolize the discussion.

Ideally it should be a self-imposed restraint as I always like to think most people on NSC would know when they're close to stepping over the line.

It is possible to robustly argue and fundamentally disagree whilst remaining civil, courteous and respectful of differing opinions.

At times like these, it's much more important that we are useful than just being right."

Time to ban it in the UK?

Musk is stirring up civil unrest and spreading conspiracy theories. He is a danger to our country.

I wonder how Tesla/SpaceX shareholders feel?

He’s the guy who’s promised self-driving cars every year since about 2017, and is going to terraform Mars “any day now” - yet he’s got plenty of time to be sitting around on X stirring up racial hatred.

Wholeheartedly agree. The self appointed SME's do need to be reined in and that is an excellent suggestion.

Where I disagree with Harts shirt is the ability of certain posters to self police. I think some of those in question are blissfully unaware that they don't need to post their views which we've read 100s of times before when their favourite topic of conversation comes to the fore once again.
