[Albion] The greatest Brighton-Japanese interaction of all time?

Looking at Brighton-Japanese relations through British and Swedish newspaper archives, not a lot has been going on.

These appears to be the two most important interactions between these worlds:

1. TODAY in 1982 there was a whale catching committe (IWO) meeting in Brighton where Japan said they were going to do everything they could to keep fishing whales. People were protesting outside hotel Metropole. In the end some sort of agreement was reached to stop fishing wales at the end of the 1985/86 season.
2. Two years earlier, in 1980, it seems there was another discussion on the same subject. Japan, Russia, Korea, Chile and Canada all said no to the worldwide ban the UK, US and a few other nation wanted.

And thats it.

If you're as disinterested in whales as I am, this means today - unless someone can find something more powerful - will be a historical day for everyone in Japan and/or Brighton.

Brighton factually.....
Is the correct answer, I was lucky enough to be down in that corner when they went over the line....
Absolutely loved it, I went nuts, it was a personal victory for me, sticking it to all those horrible South African site managers I have come across over the years....

Take that.

I assume the game was played in Brighton?

Well, could be it then. Though suspect both sperm whales and Mitoma would disagree.

James Drummond (who was a Commissar-General after Waterloo) lived in Brighton in the mid-1800s where he was said to have the most extensive library of books about Japan in existence. He'd lived there for 6 or 7 years when he was younger.

Proper Shogun vibes, IMO.

Famously, yes.

There were big groups of Japanese tourists taking the Amex stadium tour, long before Kaoru Mitoma arrived - just to visit the spot where this happened.

Tony planned out the prior Rugby win to perfection. He really is playing a level above the rest of us.

Two items on their agenda for Sussex.
The above tour of the Amex, and the other crowding the 12/12X buses to visit the Cuckmere Valley/Seven Sisters and Beachy Head.

Same. What a wonderful sense of euphoria when Japan nicked that win right at the death. And the total makeover of the Amex was like entering a parallel universe. I swear I was the only person in the capacity crowd wearing the stripes. Still got a copy of the Argus from that glorious day 😊

Yes, there was a even a feature-length film made about it in 2019. The title left no room for ambiguity abuot the venue; it was called 'The Brighton Miracle'.

I believe they are yet to make a film or Netflix series about a couple of whaling conferences in the early 80s.

The only close reference I can see regarding Brighton in the 80s and whaling was this....
The moment he threw away the election. :lolol:
