Southgate did a brilliant job with bringing the players supporters and country together with plenty of things to cheer about. He was honest, squeaky clean and worked exceptionally hard for the FA within all age groups. This tournament however, despite limping our way to the final was pretty poor in terms of quality. Apart from a couple of brilliant finishes we stank the place out although we weren't the only 1s. We have some great players but they don't perform as a team and maybe, just maybe, Gareth wasn't strong enough to lay into them when needed? Maybe a Graham Potter will be the same as Southgate? A Mr nice guy who won't be able to tackle the egos.
I think the England vibe is much better these days, egos won’t be an issue. Long gone are the toxic John Terry’s and “the big man is back in town” days.

Egos the wrong word. What I mean is dealing with dropping players who aren't performing, the likes of Kane, Bellingham and Walkers who automatically start games.
True. I’d like to think he’d get Bellingham performing but the other two can piss off.

Yes, Bellingham is the future amongst several other youngsters although some reports suggest he upset a few of the squad with his media stuff!

Don't know the exact reports but it was talked about this morning. Something about him having a hissy with Southgate and some players unhappy with his social media posts.

Regarding of the playing style, he's the most successful England manager in half a century if not ever.

It's a good number though not one I think can be used to compare him to others. I'm not a Southgate hater but he's also managed about 30% more tournament games than any other England manager. He can only compete against the teams he's drawn against but I'm not sure quality of opposition in qualifying to get there in the first place or in tournaments necessarily makes it a fair comparison.
The average FIFA ranking for teams England played in the 2018 world cup was 23rd...in 2020 the average ranking was 22nd...22nd is actually the average ranking for all teams England have played in tournaments under Southgate, 4 times worse than England's own average ranking.
If ranking had been done the same at the time of Bobby Robson's tournament games, for comparison they were against teams averaging a ranking of around 10. Robson never faced a single team whose ranking was as poor as even the average of the ones Southgate has faced...not to undermine what he did but the narrative England under Southgate had it relatively easy isn't without foundation.
To further dig into the stats that support that perhaps - under the same timeframe as Southgate, Spain have played teams in tournaments with an average ranking of 12, while their own average ranking has been 8 - they've consistently shown they can play against and beat their peers. I'm not sure England ever did that under Southgate, the success was almost entirely against much weaker sides.

I have not read most of this thread.
I will stick up for the OP, to a point. Numbers don't lie. The former waistcoatwanker will go down in history as an incredibly successful manager in terms of win percentages etc. I nod approvingly in his general direction.
His success in part was due to the successes of others in terms of the bigger England development set up. He deserves some but not full credit.
Fair play, recent tournament progression has been tremendous.
However, what a fukken uninspired mess on the pitch. Again and again. Gotta pick the faves eh?
We could, and should have been celebrating 2 cups with dominant exciting performances.
There is enough support so the next person can set fire to the game plan he will inherit and write a dynamic replacement.
I have my England mojo levels rising again.
