What's happened to them?! Looking to book to go up north end of the summer. Trains for the weekend now available, but only £138 off peak return. Absolutely scandalous. Checked the weekends prior and all the same.

Up until now, booking in advance I'd be able to get advance tickets for around £80/90 return. This is on TrainPal, too, not just the National Rail app.

Car it is in my case now. Sod paying that much

Try booking the journeys in smaller chunks. I need to go to London in a couple of weeks with my boy and a single is £9 - £7 for me and £2 for him. Same for return journey

Thanks - i tried that too - lewes and brighton to Victoria = £44 return off peak. Again, zero advance tickets 🤦‍♂️ weirdly, that journey next week would be £23 return off peak 🤷‍♂️

The trains now are unusable, the Chiltern line to London (I live in the midlands) excepted. Whenever I look at train journeys for an away game it is an impossibly large amount for me and the lad with no advance tickets to purchase and it is always cheaper to drive. It's ridiculous.

Is this via the West Coast Mainline? I've given up on trying to find cheap advance tickets on anything involving this now - they just never seem to exist.

If you can be a bit flexible on departure time then have a look at avantisuperfare.co.uk

“We match you to an empty seat, you get a bargain Superfare ticket on a fast and comfy Avanti West Coast train. Book at least 7 days in advance and up to 56 days before travel. Choose a morning, afternoon or evening departure window. Get your ticket 24 hours before you depart.”

Obviously you’ve still got to get to/from Euston though….

It's weekend of 24th August going to Stockport and back for a wedding - Saturday leaving early doors and need to be back by Sunday late pm!

Funnily enough my wife travelled up to a wedding in Stockport (although stayed in Glossop as that is where the reception was) at the end of May. She went up on the Thursday for a Friday wedding and came on the Saturday. Best I found was £55 each way from Bexhill to Glossop Advance fares. Although as some joyriders crashed into the barrier at Berwick just before her train got to Polegate she ended up having to Taxi to Lewes and then get to London via Brighton - so we got the £55 paid to get up there delay repaid.

You need to wait until the cheap ones become available. I'm looking to book the same weekend. It's usually six weeks prior to journey time. You can set an alert to inform you when the cheap ones go on sale.

What this guy said, I'd recommend using London Northwestern and Northern if you don't mind it taking a bit longer as well, as usually is a lot cheaper.

Consumerism at it's worst, get the new government to re-nationalise everything, and simplify the fares structure.
