Pascal has been saying he wants to go back to Germany for months and the club has been bidding on suitable replacements.
Its safe to say we have given permission, regardless of what some journalist writes.

No it doesn’t. The post says that Brighton and Dortmund are negotiating the transfer.
A transfer fee doesn’t have to be agreed before a player can talk to another club.
If it’s got to this stage then the club are likely well aware and any conversation between the players rep and any other club will have happened with our knowledge and permission.

Suspect if Pascal does go, we might go for 1 more attack minded central midfielder to replace him. Would be nice to see another big signing to go into the middle with Wieffer

Why would the club give permission first? It does not benefit them to do that. It would have us in a stronger position to make them bid first.

I have not seen a suitable replacement bid on or am I missing something. Again, I would be amazed it Dortmund could afford a player that is so important and one of the top creators in the EPL.

Out of respect to Pascal who has been exceptional and professional in every single sense since he signed for the club. As previous posters have pointed out, he has been clear in saying he wants to return to Germany. We do not need to be a “strong position” for this. We are letting Pascal move on not get another record transfer fee.

Yes, we had a bid accepted for Dewsbury-Hall, but missed out.
We have also bid for Georginio Rutter of Leeds.
Both are serial assist makers, just like Gross. It looks like we are trying to replace his creativity, albeit in a slightly different form.

Weiffer coming in alongside WBG will allow a new CAM. Could be Facu or Julio or a new signing.
You won’t see a replacement Gross come in simply because there isn’t one. He is a unique player.
As to price, see my previous, this will be an “undisclosed” transfer I suspect with a token fee for a 33 year old in his last year of contract. Despite stats, this isn’t going to be a lot. Man Utd signed Christian Ronaldo 3 years ago for around £12m. Fair to say he had a better rep and stats than Gross.

I absolutely do not get this. Why would we out ourselves in a weaker position to potentially loose a critical player? Why do we not need to be in a strong position?

The club have always been very open that they don’t stand in the way of a player leaving if the time is right. Pascal has a year left on his contract, if he’s made it obvious that he doesn’t want to sign any new deal and wishes to go back to Germany then the time is right as this is our last chance to get a fee for him. For that reason they wouldn’t stop his representatives from talking to another club. While this is going on the clubs will be talking about transfer fees as well.
This won’t just happen on this deal it will happen on most deals as it’s a lot easier to establish that everyone is roughly on the same page early to no one wastes any time.
Also it could be argued that by Dortmund agreeing a contract with Gross that we’ve now got something they really really want and we can push our end of the deal more.
Dortmund are buying a player with one season left on his contract, that and his age will keep the fee well within what Dortmund can afford, rather than any fee being boosted because he’s one of the most creative players in the PL. That is simple football economics.
