Nah there's way more to kit manufacturing that you'd think. If it were that simple there'd be plenty more billionaire owners doing it!


For me Umbro and Macron are the two with the best balance between design and quality. Adidas are Nike 2.0. Despite the 3 stripes looking nice, the kits they'd make for a pleb team like us wouldn't be much better than Nike. We'd get the standard training gear, no retro stuff that's for sure.

Nike have improved a lot in design and quality. I hope we see further improvements in bespoke designs, one off kits, better quality fit and finish. But I'm not holding my breath. We went with them because that swoosh shifts shirts not just here but across the world.

Nike are likely paying more for exposure than Brighton could make from shirt sales.

Regardless if that is the case, it probably take lots and lots of years to cover the costs from building a factory, paying the employees European wages to produce shirts, setting up distribution etc.

The U14 team I coach play in red and black shirts (Umbro) - but the club don’t provide a change strip, meaning when we play away fixtures and there is a colour clash they have to wear training bibs over their match shirts. Which they hate.

So this week, having had enough of this, me and my fellow coach bought 13 of these for £3 per shirt…

Ha! No - it is a plain blue back, but that does make easier regarding applying numbers - which I shall do myself, using iron-on numbers. (The joys of being grass roots coach. It seems reasonable to assume Fab doesn't spend his evenings ironing numbers onto shirts...)

Even so, I was pretty chuffed to find them in a range of sizes at 90% discount. Seems like all the major kit suppliers and on-line sports stores are having a clear out of them.

A few years back I bought a set of plain blue umbro kit for my team (we had red and black club umbro home shirts but had grown out of the free mcdonalds grass roots nike green and white change kit they had from when they were u7s

Same as you, no club badge but self ironed numbers all for 40gbp inc the number for 14 shirts (so 6 were double numbers). I was so proud of myself until someone pointed out I had got one of the 1s upside down

Fair enough - although all the major outlets (Lovells, KitLocker etc) seem to be offering the same product at the same discounts. I guess it is approaching that point in the season where they know if it hasn't sold it is unlikely to and over the summer they will be re-stocking with next seasons designs etc.

In the UK, punishment for trademark infringement can be up to 10 years in prison, an unlimited fine, or both.

Probably borderline impossible to find and prosecute the shady Chinese owners of most counterfeit factories.
