[Cricket] The Hundred - gender pay gap

I appreciate this is a very political topic, but this whole thing about the gender pay gap in cricket does wind me up.

I’m not an enormous fan of the Hundred anyway, but actually do watch some women’s cricket. But to suggest there should be equal pay because the products are marketed equally totally ignores the fact that the women’s game is just not that well supported and at many levels they almost have to give the tickets away. I just don’t see how you can justify going for equal pay when it’s clear that the women’s game is not remotely as popular as the men’s. It can only be justified if it’s meant to be effectively a donation and/or for non-economic reasons.

I support trying to build the women’s game up, but equal pay should be the result of equal (or similar) popularity for the product being offered and it’s way off that at the moment (not just in cricket).

To be fair, the argument for and against equal pay is not the same as the argument for and against the gender pay gap.

Equal pay is a non-starter all the while there aren't enough people (especially women) prepared to pay to watch women play sport. On the other hand, narrowing the gender pay gap is probably necessary to avoid the chicken and egg situation of "which comes first - filling the stands for women's sport or the good salaries?"

Football leads the way on this, and in a decade or so, we will find out if it was right that big clubs saw the potential in a fully professional women's league. Some clubs (especially Arsenal) are seeing huge crowds for women's football, but others are still watched by 2-3,000. Will crowds and interest in women's football gravitate towards Arsenal's levels of interest, or only, say, Manchester City's? Certainly there are more girls playing football at clubs and school than ever before.

Are the ladies at Wimbledon now paid the same as men?

Even though they play best of three, rather than best of five sets.

Can a mod correct the thread title please.
It has Cricket in the subject field
I still refer to it as 'The Humbug' and I think that any such mention should be auto corrected. A bit like when Mike Dean was altered.

I never see Crodo posts anymore, so thankfully I won't be able to see the main thread. Actually, I will, so I may have to put the thread on ignore.

Phew, that's a relief to actually read the posts on this thread...

When I saw the thread title I thought we were now up to a hundred genders!

They’re not equal products, shouldn’t really be compared
They are more equal than you might think - marketed together under one banner. Games on the same day. Same format.
The pay gap should indeed more narrow.
The women shouldn’t be paid more though, the men should be paid less.
Or even better, scrap the competition and develop county cricket.
Yes, the 100 brings in money. But on a cricketing level it should be binned. The public remains indifferent to it despite the authorities giving away tickets to boost attendances, spending god knows how much on marketing it and trashing the alternative competitions to accommodate it.

I’d be very happy if it was binned.

I watch all womens televised T20 cricket. The structure of the current WPL is odd. All teams play a number of games at the same venue and then move on to the next. In Delhi, if the Capitals are playing the ground sells out. If its Gujurat v UPW there are swathes of seats with no bums on them. Just a BCCI screw-up with the structure of the tournament.

I'm not overly keen on the structure of The Hundred. Every other major cricketing nation has a franchise T20 tournament (ex Sri Lanka I think) but some are men only. I don't understand why England just didn't replace the Blast (which does not attract the quality international players that the IPL/WPL and BBL/WBBL do) with a franchise T20 tournament for men and women.

Our mens and womens international teams are a bit crap and, currently, a bit of an embarrassment. Maybe the lack of domestic franchise T20 cricket is partly to blame?

Would it upset / concern me if The Hundred disappeared tomorrow? Nope.

Yes they are. But having been going for decades, womens tennis is very popular in its own right, and skill levels and fitness at the top level are very comparable with the blokes. I don't think you can say that yet about the Cricket, having watched some of the "Ashes" and the WPL recently.
