Air ambulance called in after girl, four, injured - Local - Mid Sussex Times

An air ambulance called in, after 4 year old girl clipped by wing mirror. Now I know some people are going to say, that you should err on the side of caution where a child is involved. So I will add a few details to that reported, and you can make up your own minds as to the use of resources in mid - sussex.

The little girl was clipped in a busy one way street. Within minutes there were 3 ambulances and 5 police cars on the scene, including plain clothes. The road down which runs several bus routes and is the only way out for a car park was closed for an hour. The helicopter turned up, about 30 minutes after the initial ambulances.

Complete chaos, ensued.

Probably the entire on duty police force came down for a mosey round.

Exactly this...

Lets not spend 10's of thousands of pounds on cancer sufferers to allow them those special last few months with their family, if they are only going to die anyway....

Slippery slope choosing money over life...Afterall it is just money...

Air ambulance is indeed funded by charity (and they are not rolling in cash), it still does not change the fact, that loads of police were wasting their time, and 3 ambulances for 1 child.

I am not bemoaning the use of money to treat a child, I am pointing out, that if anyone with a modicum of sense had taken control of the situation then a lot less time and money could have been spent, and aforementioned time and money could indeed be spent on cancer sufferers or chasing down criminals, etc etc

Absolutely spot on sir!

But you do realise that you risk the wrath of the 'but what about the children' brigade? You also risk being arrested, tortured and deemed a danger to society by daring to bring into question the judgement of the heroes of our time, otherwise known as 'anyone wearing a fluro yellow jacket in an official capacity'. Run away, hide, go into exile before the thought police get you!

It's pretty strange that the 3 ambulance crews could not diagnose that all she was suffering from was cuts and bruises and nothing more serious in those first few minutes and then just contact the air ambulance and tell them not to bother coming. Admittedly it's more difficult diagnosing a very young child, but yeah, wasting the air ambulances limited funds.

As injuries can be internal and identifying injuries in children is so hard as a scrape on the knee hurts to them, also depends where she was clipped, if she hit her head, many many times the air ambulance gets called out.

Also as for the police im sure one if 2 where traffic cars who are trained in accident management they will have to know exactly what happened the road would have to be closed or a section would have been closed so another for traffic management. U would have crowds more than likely so one or 2 to manage them

Tears in my eyes just reading that. The emergency services probably got loads of calls through at the same time. Surely if they are not doing anything its best to send them there.

Saw 6, YES SIX old bill parked up by the large broadwater roundabout a few weeks back, 2 standing by their car at the broadwater end, by the mini roundabout, then another FOUR at the top end, before the warren roundabout.
This 4 consisted of a WPC holding a speed camera, and 3 uniformed police standing with their arms crossed, just watching. What's the f***ing point of that? No wonder theres a lack of respect for them. Probably on overtime as well as it was a sunday.

Oh, and fining my 80 year old stepfather who is on a state pension, and can barely afford to keep his car running £30 because his tax disc had fallen off. f***ing wankers!

I agree, i very much doubt the emergency services are on a commsion based salary and get paid regardless so all they've "wasted" is their fuel?

My mate had 2 fire engine's outside his house last night, one of them the big box ladder one. All to look for a cat on the roof of a 3/4 story building...now that's a waste of taxpayers money. Anyone could have quite easily hopped out a Window on the top floor and got it.

Or just left it to come down of its own accord, via the route it took to get up there...

Where was the nearest available hospital? If it makes the journey quicker (and safer), then it would make sense to call an air ambulance. It may have been the case that the police were on hand simply to cordon off the busy road ready for the helicopter's arrival. Whilst waiting for it to land, paramedics on the ground would have been needed to stabilise the girl until she could be transported to hospital.

Or, it might have been a simple case of the 999 call is made, with a vague description that a youngster has been struck by a car, this is immediately made a priority call, and hey presto you have all the local emergency resources racing to the scene with their blues and twos on. Was it a hit and run? If so, extra officers will be needed to gather evidence and witness statements.

I remember watching a documentary a while back where a kidney was been rushed from Luton Airport to a London hospital. I swear about half the Met turned out to block off junctions and escort the organ to the operating theater - no expenses spared there. And it was most definitely worth it.

When the fire alarm went off in my Uni halls it used to automatically call out the fire brigade. Drunken freshers and cooking equipment, I imagine we cost them a fair amount of money.

I can see that there are many possible explanations as to why this or that may have been necessary, and I am not going to harp on about it, I am sure it was all very distressing for the poor little girl.

However I will quickly answer these few points.

The emergency services are based a matter of a few hundred yards away, so co-ordination should not have been difficult. Accident and Emergency hospital is 3 miles away as is one of the best head trauma hospitals in the country.

The road is one way with access from a mini roundabout which requires 1 person or a sign to manage the traffic flow.

It was not hit and run, the car stopped within a few yards of the accident.

So, at the risk of Mr/Mrs Outrage getting worked up. I must say it was one big drama. If it had unfortunately been the case of a severe injury, it would still not have required everyone but the bomb squad to turn up! and stand around for an hour whilst a few people did there very worthwhile work.
