Anybody regularly use their local market? In these cash strapped times, for the past 3 months we've taken to buying ALL our fruit and veg at the market. Not only is it MILES cheaper, but the quality is MUCH better too.

Just interested to see if anyone else is doing the same thing...

The only markets I see are on bank holidays. We HAVE no local market.

I've shopped at the Open Market for years. It's the cheapest place by some way to buy food in Brighton

I thought our wonderful Council were going to revamp the outdoor market on London Rd? I think it's bordering on criminal that our city hasn't got a quality permanent market worthy of the name. Still, I guess they're still too busy wasting our taxes on far more 'worthy' projects..

Disagree.Fruits and veg at markets have a very short life span.

Yes, because they haven't been RADIATED to oblivion. Some supermarket stuff like bananas and avocados stay hard and unripe for about 2 weeks, then mysteriously just go off.

What's really shocking is how poor markets are over here. I've frequently holidayed in France and it's a joy to go to the local markets and see stalls bulging with decent produce at a fair price. Why do markets over here have to be such half-arsed affairs?

Probably because we import most of our produce from the continent.

I spent nearly 10 years working on reading market from the age of 13,it was the superstores that made things very difficult back then but maybe things are changing again.

I hope the markets do survive as its a great tradition:whisky:

I have to agree - French markets (& Italian) are absolutely fabulous compared to ours. Clearly, its a cultural thing. I'm afraid food is simply not part of the fabric of society here as it is in those countries.

So in answer to your question, I guess it either comes down to supply and demand, or that not enough is being done to encourage local markets at a municipal level.
