The quintessential English band who had a thousand things they wanted to say to us and said them all before Weller was 23. Which of their songs is your favourite?

I cannot decide, so many great ones to choose from:

- English Rose ..superb and beautiul, only matched when Weller later penned 'You do something to me'.

- Thick as Thieves..a song about mates and belonging..surely the inspiration for many Oasis tunes.

- Thats Entertainment..the most evocative lyrics of working class culture in popular music?

- Town Called Malice..purely for the poignant line 'hanging out their old love letters, on the line to dry'. Has anyone ever created a more touching image of a woman stuck in a loveless marriage longing for the exuberance of her youth'...not that many have bothered.

- The Bitterest Pill..superb full stop.

- Eton Rifles...a song for the clas warrior amongst us.

- Going Underground..eastern european politics translated to a language the british youth could understand.

- Down in a tueb station at midnight...the most atmospheric song ever..you feel like you are there getting a kicking.

A town called Malice.

Although it always reminds me of Billy Elliot & Swan Lake now, which is a bit gay :safeway:

"You either cut down on beer or the kids new gear its a big decision in a town called malice."

Has anyone ever summed up working class life in this country as well as Paul Weller? I think not.

Weller is the George Orwell of popular music.

I would also give a shout for "Precious" - funk masterpiece, "Man in the Cornershop", "Start" and "Ghosts". I generally preferred the later, more evolved Jam but it doesn't get any better than "Going Underground".

I have to say I find Paul Weller unlistenable now, boring, passionless, "authentic" muso rubbish.

This - again!?!?

From the Pride thread...

Richie: If someone is gay thats fine..good luck to them but dont think everyone else is interested or bothered because times have moved on

Warren: Funny, I think EXACTLY the same when you bang on about The Jam and the mod scene.

Richie: I dont actually go on about the mod scene at all.

:lolol: :lolol: :lolol:

Far too many to mention. Easier to say the only one I don't really like is 'Start!'

Who could pick between 'Tube Station,' 'Funeral Pyre,' 'Eating Trifles,' 'Strange Town,' 'A-Bomb,' 'In the City' and all the other fine tunes they produced?

Butterfly collector and That's Enterntainment for me.

Such a shame that Weller became a professional arsehole after being such a hero to so many with The Jam.

I never bought any Jam records, they were good but not quite going in my direction. I always enjoyed their stuff when it came on though and "In the City" was a great start. In the middle "English Rose" and "Thats Entertainment" were both very good songs and got the heckles up.

No-one has mentioned their last release, cant remember what it was although it may have been a double A with Precious ? Everyone knew they were splitting up and it was like an anthem to leave by, full of wailing brass.
I spoke to Bruce Foxton in a bog in a pub in Convent Garden at the time and he sounded pretty pissed off about it - or was he pissed off with so many people asking him about it...

Anyway i will go for their last 'hit'.

Can we now have a thread on Weller's support band of choice 'The Faith Brothers'? Two classic albums in 'Eventide' and 'A Human Sound' before disappearing into the red socialist mist forever.

"History handed down by big brother's clothes, mad men and giant's cast offs stretched and frayed or tailor made,
News of the old world hangs on slender shoulders now, every lesson been denied, every answer yet untried, every dream unrealised, shall begin anew when I meet with you at Eventide..."

Walls Come Tumblin' Down .

Finishing their career on an aggresive high .
As someone else pointed out earlier , and along with The Specials
( other than Stereotype ), the only 2 bands in history never to
record a dud song .

Good call. They also worked well with the Vapors. Three nights in a row at the Rainbow, including my birthday. What more could a young lad ask for?
