Can we put this to bed once and for all. Both Celtic and Liverpool claim it as their song. Both claim to have had it first. I always thought that Liverpool fans started singing it when it was released by Gerry and the Pacemakers ( circa 1963 ).
I've always thought that Celtic picked it up after Liverpool but over the years, Celtic fans that I have bumped into have always claimed it was being sung at Parkhead before Gerry Marsden released it.
I have always had to correct Man Utd fans over.." Glory, Glory "...which they pinched from Tottenham and am in no doubt that it is Spurs song but I just don't know about " YNWA "

Gives me goosebumps when I hear it sung by a big crowd, no idea who started singing it first. Possibly the best football song?

Actually it comes from the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical "Carousel" first performed in the 1950's.
AFAIK it was last sung in Brighton splendidly a week ago Saturday by the whole audience at the Dome with the John Wilson Orchestra.

As it was originally sung in the 1945 film Carousel by a woman. I doubt if any Celtic supporters would have picked it up, until it came to national prominence, sung by Liverpool's Gerry and the Pacemakers.

I dont remember hearing it sung by anybody before Gerry and The Pacemakers recorded it and it was adopted by Liverpool in fact I cannot remember many actual songs sung by fans other than Blaydon Rcaes by Newcastle and Keep Right on to the end of the Road by Birmingham before the 60s.

I wonder when the gay stuff actually started. Certainly in the old Goldstone North stand in the violent days of the 70's I don't recall any connection between Brighton and homosexuality.

The woman was Clara Mae Turner. The film was first released in 1956 but the stage version first was performed on Broadway in 1945.

Boring Fact.

It was adopted by Liverpool after the song went to Number 1 in 1963 and stayed there for a month, before this it was tradition at Anfield to play whatever was number 1 before the game, the song was adopted because the fans stated singing along to it.

When Celtic first sung it, f*** knows.

Mawdling sentimental pap.

Given how rapidly the Amex empties at 10 mins from the end of a match it's not a song we could sing with any conviction anyway
