While we are talking about Sussex club cricket, can people spare a moment's silence to mourn the death of the oldest league in the county ... the Cuckmere Valley League.

:(

Moshe... isn't that the league Selmeston play in ? What's the story, will you be playing league cricket this season ?

All gone to the East Sussex League.

really...i will have a look in the escl site and see if where they have been put.

I recon Firle is the most picturesque ground in the South!

Firle and Selmeston are playing in Division 8 of the East Sussex League. East Dean are in Division 10.

I'm not sure how the ESCL set about slotting the Cuckmere Valley teams into their structure. The sad thing is that some cricketing rivalries that go back over a hundred years won't find an outlet in league cricket any more.

I think there are plans to keep the old CVL Tommy Lusted tournament going in some form or other.

Blimey - firle are a better team than div 8!!!

i remember when Crowborough were allowed back in after their foray into the Sussex League, they actually struggled in the ESCL and are in divi 3 of the ESCL with our firsts!

Your firsts are in div 2. Crowborough will play in div 3 this season having got relegated.

I play for Pevensey and we have friendly rivalry with Firle and they're peeved at being placed in Div 8.

I just hope that playing in Division 8 of the East Sussex League doesn't bring an end to the series of top quality charity matches that Firle have been able to host over the years.

I've seen a couple of great matches between Firle and an England Oldtimers XI - who were quite happy to play the many times champions of the oldest league in Sussex, but might think twice before turning out against a Division 8 team.

And think of the village kids ... will they be able to boast about blasting a six off the bowling of John Snow, like their dads can?

Hove, f***ing ACTUALLY.
Is just me, or is it getting harder and harder to put a team together these days, first nets of the season last week and only 15 or so turn up for a club that has to fill FOUR sides.

Dave, do you guys ever play friendlies against touring sides ? I've been lumbered with organising something, and i'm sick of it being Newbury or Oxford every year.

Yes absolutely. we have a decent set of youngsters and also a load of old barstards like myself.

We have a cricket week where we play visiting sides and we can always get a reasonalble side out at most times.

just let us know and I will pass the informantion on to the relevant people.

He used to run St Peters III, I heard he just left, whats he doing now, anyone know?

Shame because he had faith in me opening the batting

is taffy still one of your umpires?

I played for Noel bennett X1 one Christmas day many years ago and most of the St Peters team played - The Smallwoods, Potter, etc etc.

the 7 for 37 was a brilliant piece of spin bowling I'll have you know :lolol: ...they only wanted 60dd when I came on and were 2 wickets down cruising it on battle's ground where you cant hit sixes as the pitch is so small!!!!
