I am fairly certain there are SOME players in League 2 who could handle the step up (some may have played in this league before), who wouldn't be put off by the ground and wouldn't demand unrealistic wages.

the only trouble with that is that most decent league two players would be ridiculously overpriced, as they are considered the cream of the crop for that league

this is where we missed out on picking them up on free transfers in the summer - now anyone we sign from down below is going to be for a fee

Yeh, that's true.

But that really does beg the question..WHY THE HELL WHERE WE NOT SIGNING PLAYERS ON A FREE? McGhee usually gives the 'no better than what we've already got' excuse, but i am fairly sure that, after yesterday, there were very few players with league experience who could have weakened our side.

Not sure, but with the exception of Loft, all our recent signings seem to be loan singings of inexperiencec players from decent teams, or random trialists reccomended by agents.

Which reminds me - have we employed a proper scout yet? Or have we still got an ex tv salesman doing it?

We hear Dean White has been going all over Europe looking for players on the cheap. Have we been looking at league 2 or the Conference ? Can we afford a scout. What players has Dean White found ? What wages are we paying for no return ?

I don't know - but if we can afford to send Dean White all across the county, surely we could afford to employ someone (part time at the very least) to scout the lower leagues?

And look at our success in Europe. Molango...Turienzo...about 10 trialists who's name's i've forgotten (other than Bagayoko and Kerekes)...and erm???

The links with Le Havre bought us some success last season with the French players, but we can't rely on that alone. ???

the other problem is if they are decent in league two, then there will be other clubs in this league looking at them, which pretty much rules us out, due to all the negativity around the club

if a player was looking for a new club, i imagine the last place he would want to come is somewhere where there is a strong chance they are going to be booed off after a game, or clapped and cheered sarcastically just because they have removed a fans favourite from the team and so every mistake they make is highlighted

compare this to the wave of enthusiam around the place when adams was in charge, where brighton could of been seen as somewhat of a dream destination and a club on the up, and i think you have a pretty good case as to why we struggle to attract anyone of quality

You never get a player for free. The agent gets paid, the player gets a signing on fee and then you pay over the top on wages. It probably works out more then if you paid a fee. It is just that his existing club don't get any of the money. There is no such thing as a free transfer.
Dick Knight has stated he wiull not pay agents, apparently. Can we afford the wages that are being asked.
Falmer money would probably answer that. We have spent so much on Falmer over the last few seasons that we can't afford decent palyers wages.

interesting. if it is the case that mr knight will not pay agents, this could be one of the sole reasons why we are unable to attract anyone of a decent standard available on a free to the club - as surely any player who is half good is going to have an agent

When did Dick Knight state that though? Was it because he blundered - thinking Turienzo was a free when in actual fact his agent owned the contract? Still, it didn't stop him paying Carole and Frutos's agents?

Carole's agent got him the transfer to make more money from Leeds. His contract had the get out clause but his agent did all the work to make the money. Knight would not shell out to keep him to stay. Frutos showed more loyalty and didn't mind staying because he was settled so signed a new contract and the clause was dropped.

I meant when we signed them, Knight had to pay the agents - last years figures showed us as one of the highest spenders on agents i recall. I wonder what made him change his mind.

Did he actually say that he wasn't going to pay agent fees???? Because that could be a HUGE factor in things - e.g the Burgess saga, as Insider suggested ages ago that a fee had been agreed but there were other issues involved?

For what players and when. Having been burnt with Turenzo ? Don't forget every new contract arranged for existing players would command an agents fee. He will not deal direct with agents taking money out of football. I am sure you will find he has been on an FA seminar discussing it.

Nice to see that loyalty has been returned by McGhee dropping him!

Bollox I promised not to get involved in the McGhee debate until we'd play'ed 10 games!
