I'd make three changes:

Le Roux for Kirtley
Arnold for Lewry
Gould for Prior

I might bring in John Barclay for Adams. David Smith was also a very good opener in a poor Sussex team.

Although my changes suggest I might be 5 or 6 years older than you. It's very subjective.

Le Roux was the fastest bowler i have ever seen for Sussex...Big bloke and he thundered in.

Immy and Le Roux were in their Sussex pomp when I started going - what an introduction. GLR was a big intimidating bloke, although of the era, I'd say Adrian Jones was the one I'd have least liked to face - always struck me as a nasty bugger!

Le Roux was very, very close to being in my ideal team. A classic 'in your face' Saffer, competitive in the extreme and a magnificent double act with Imran. I recall a BBC programme that used them as an example of different but very effective bowling actions.

I agree about Jonah too, for a big lad he appeared to mimic Imran's tippy toe bowling style. Certainly used to get up a real head of steam and bowled a nasty short ball. Pity his career at Sussex didn't blossom, ditto at Somerset too.

Back in the day it was great to stand by the pavilion boundary rope and watch the Sussex bowlers warm up at very close quarters - gave a real impression of the pace and bounce they could generate just on the outfield and off a very short run up.....made you appreciate the difference between club and county cricket. Jones was pretty scary.

Seem to recall Adrian Jones career was made better by his move to Somerset. Did very well in his first couple of seasons there.

Good news that Lukey has signed an extended contract. News today that Nick Compton has quit Zummerzet, I know it's a slim hope but if we bagged him and dropped Gnasher to 3 and had Yootha at 4, I would think that is a top loaded formidable batting lineup ?

Joyce
Mendis
Adams
A Wells
Goodwin
Prior
Imran Khan
Mushtaq Ahmed
Kirtley
Magoffin
Lewry

I'd dump Wells for Paul Parker, great batsman and one of the finest fielders in the covers ever.

Blimey, that would be a budget-busting line-up. Think we'd need a Tony Bloom on board for that

I started watching in 65 so I'd have (sticking to just two overseas players)

Dexter
Mendis
Joyce
Goodwin
Parker
Greig
Prior
Imran
Snow
Thomson
Mushy

If you had unlimited overseas players then you could just pick Miandad, Wessels, Bevan, Di Venuto, Stephenson, Le Roux but there's been a limit of no more than two most of my lifespan so I'll stick with that

Sussex have been blessed with some wonderful overseas players over the years, I'd have to go with Bevan, who was an absolute genius when it came to placing a shot between fielders, and Mustaq Ahmed. Mind you, Ranjitsinhji should get a mention too .

I'm sure we could find the cash, a top four of Wells,Compton,Nash and Joyce now that would be entertaining. Not much fun for Compton though , who would have to hold an end up while we proceeded to 420-3 .

Ranji played for England so wasn't strictly an overseas player. Mind you, his last season was 1912 so I'm not sure we'd get anyone who saw him play - even Ben's Grandad couldn't manage that one :)

Good point, but he only played for England as India did not have a recognised team, how incredible is that ? Just double checked on Wikipedia and he certainly had a healthy average at international and county level. Nearly 45 at international level and 56 at county level.

Colonel His Highness Shri Sir Ranjithsinji Vibhaji to you, Veg.

Interesting stuff on cricinfo about him. A lot of his nephews played cricket as well.

Cricinfo is quite possibly my favourite website EVER.

Is there an almanac of Sussex players available? If not, why not?

Thanks BoF, I only checked the averages on Wikipedia, that profile, although short, shows that he must have been an innovative batting genius.

His stats are incredible: the wickets in those days could be absolutely unplayable, a decent average was in the 30s - to have an average in the mid-fifties was astronomical, probably the equivalent of 80 or 90 these days. Undoubtedly the best player Sussex have ever had.

There's a very good biography of him by Alan Ross

Also it should be noted that in 1912 there were only 3 Test playing nations, England, Australia and South Africa. No minnows like Bangaladesh, Zimbabwe and New Zealand to boost your averages. KP, eat yer heart out.

To put into context how good Ranji was, look at the rest of the line-up in the 1902 Edgbaston test - widely described as England's best ever batting team - of the 11 players (all of whom scored a first class century), only three had an average of more than 40 and only two - Ranji and Fry - had averages over 50. Sussex must really have had a good team when those two played for the county

Does anyone think RHB will ever come good for us? He's been so disappointing so far, and I'm losing hope.
