No, the games don't expire after a year. It's just that there are some games that are on a yearly rotation (ie they are swapped for new titles annualy), and some are on a monthly one. Any game you put through the checkout is yours to use for as long as you are subscribed.

PS+ is now a requirement to play PS4 online, but isn't required for PS3 online play - which is free.

If you are a PS4 owner you can consider it a charge for online play, but with all the benefits I've mentioned above as free extras.

Bargain!

To play online you just need PS+, but as part of that you get free games each month.

Thanks for the answers, seems like a great service.

Imagine how much MORE the Xbox360 would've bummed the PS3 if they hadn't had the RROD issues?

That said, the PS4 looks like it'll be getting revenge this time round.

A number of things led to the PS3 catching up.

- The success of exclusives like Uncharted, Gran Turismo and Metal Gear Solid.
- The blu ray drive winning the HD disk war, for a while the PS3 was considered best bang for buck blu-ray player.
- Free online in comparison with Xbox Live and good will created by the free game offers when a member of PS+.

At the moment it looks like the PS4 is ahead of the Xbox One but not by much at all.

It still lost. Comfortably. But that's no shame, but I think the PS4 looks MUCH stronger than the Xbox One.

Quoting Free Online as a positive doesn't really work, as Xbox Live was generally seen as very good value for money.

That PS+ sounds like INSANELY good value though, sounds too good to be true?

In what way did it lose comfortably?

"The Japanese company has now sold about 77 million PS3 consoles worldwide, versus 76 million Xbox 360 consoles sold by Microsoft. The PS3 has pulled ahead despite being on the market for a shorter time - it went on sale in late 2006, about a year after the Xbox 360."

I see Xboxers as more Commodore than Spectrum, i.e more kids toy than proper gamers.

Then you are a PC gamer? Otherwise there really is no difference, in the grown upness of the Xbox or PS, surely.

The X360 and PS3 have sold the same numbers worldwide now, X360 many more in America and the PS3 many more in the EU/Japan.

PS+ is amazing and resulted from them needing to win back the good will of people after the credit car hack from the Playstation Network Servers. They often give away AAA games 6 months after launch. As long as you 'purchase' it by initiallising the download the game will be available to you so long as you have a valid PS+ subscription. Even if you stop paying PS+ and then sign up again months later the games will still be availble.

The PS3 was an utter shambling mess at launch though, launching at the same time as the WII at twice the cost with absolutely no games. They had a terrible marketing campaign as well. It didn't start getting any traction until Uncharted was released and then Metal Gear Solid 4.

The person who led the PS3 launch just happens to be the guy leading up the One launch. Once your a top level exec you'll always get a new job despite how bad you muck something up.

Fair enough. Good post.

I guess the worry is that while you never properly "own" the games, PS+ could whack the annual fee up massively and you'd be shafted, no? Just have to trust they won't do that.

I couldn't disagree more.

Sorry, just fishing a little. I was in the Spectrum v Commodore playground arguments at school, so it's fun to see there's still console gangs 30 years later.

I think the reason console wars continue way beyond the age when they should, is that a console isn't usually a cheap purchase, so people want to feel vindicated that they've made the right choice. And usually, it is a choice between two, so tribalism grows easily.

I think for most gamers - if money was no object - they'd get both.

E.G. Mega Drive and SNES were both BRILLIANT.

I see this as highly unlikely as it works for developers who get revenue from games who's sales are waining after their initial release as well as brand recognition. You also have to bear in mind that devs are likely to make extra sales on DLC for games that are in the Instant Game Collection.

From Wikipedia

Kris Graft of Gamasutra interviewed a number of developers featured in PlayStation Plus' Instant Game Collection to determine the impact it has had on profits and recognition. Graft discovered that the terms of each contract are determined on a case-by-case basis, with some publishers or developers negotiating for a cut of profits while others benefit solely from the publicity. Christofer Sundberg (Just Cause 2) said "from a PR and goodwill standpoint, [it's] most definitively worthwhile", and Tyler Glaiel (Closure) called the revenue "a nice boost". Retro City Rampage earned 125,000 new players as a result of the promotion; creator Brian Provinciano remarked that "one notable reviewer claimed that the game was too difficult and stopped playing halfway through, scoring it low. However, PS Plus cultivated another 100,000 people who can tell their friends otherwise. The word of a friend always holds more weight than that of a critic". Overall, the developers interviewed felt that Instant Game Collection had a positive impact on brand recognition and cultural cachet while still generating modest profits.

Don't forget this service has been up and running a long time now (since June 2010) and what you suggest hasn't happened yet, and even if they did ramp up the price you're still getting great value for money until you decide not to renew.

Just to give an idea how good value it is, these are the games I've grabbed since I joined Plus less than 9 months ago:

PS3:

Dead or Alive 5
Motorstorm Apocalypse
Okami HD
Lord of the Rings: War in the North
The Cave
Little Big Planet 2
Catherine
Hitman Absolution
Demon's Souls
Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning
Ico
Shadow of the Colossus
Little Big Planet Karting
Battlefield 3
Payday The Heist
Need for Speed Most Wanted
Mafia II
Spec Ops: The Line
Assassin's Creed III
Uncharted 3
Far Cry 3
Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen
Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance
Remember Me
Grid 2

PS4:

Resogun
Contrast

Whether I get to play them all or not is neither here nor there as I am sure to get £39 worth of value from those that I do.

Bear in mind also that I haven't grabbed all the PS3 titles that have been available - just the ones I'm (possibly) interested in.

Ah. Yes, I was in those too, although with the power of the internet they seem more vociferous than back then.

It's obviously worth more than the £39 it costs. But how many you actually play is relevant when using PS+ as a reason to go PS4 instead on X1. If you game all day every day, then it becomes even more worthwhile - although if that were the case, you should probably get both consoles. For me, I already put too many hours into just a few games, I really have no time for another 20. There are some popular blockbusters I've just not had time for as it is, so the huge array of free games isn't a big pull to me.

I don't dispute what you say. I only ever mentioned it on the back of a poster talking about saving money. If you want to game on a budget you really can't go wrong with PS+, and as I regularly see long time Xbox users who aren't even aware Sony do this I just thought I'd put it out there.

Folks should do what works for them. I'm a 45 year old guy who's far too long in the tooth to care about arguing over consoles, but PS+ is a terrific thing that not everybody is aware of, but could (and should) be influential to some when deciding on a purchase.
