Pretty sure it was Cyprus - back in the 70's - but can't find any confirmation.

England played Cyprus in April 75 (qualifier for Euro Championship 76) , beat them 5 nil and Supermac scored all five goals. Usually comes up as a question in a pub quiz asking which player scored 5 goals for England in one game.

All of the Premier teams, and the top half of the championship would beat these minnows.
Even yourselves would fancy putting away one of the numerous chances you create.

The San Marino goalkeeper would play like Gordon Banks knowing our luck at the moment

Feel free to bounce this thread when Palace beat San Marino. It will NEVER happen.

Neil Warnock thinks so.

Thankfully, the world doesn't care what Neil Warnock thinks...the massive ****.

I'd expect all the prem teams and most of the championship sides to win, in all honesty.

You portrayed that far more eloquently than I managed.

I think any team that gets out of the group stage of the Champions League would beat any but the very best international teams - Germany, Argentina, Holland etc.

Simply, top club teams can buy players from any country to fill any position, while national sides are limited to what their country produces. Almost every team at the World Cup included players that would struggle to get into the Barcelona, Bayern Munich or Man City teams. And clubs train and work on team shape and tactics most days and have a level of understanding that most national teams can never hope to match. I'd back Chelsea to beat England 9 times out of ten.

You see I think the answer is no.

And I'll tell you for why. One is an international team and the other is a club team. They will never play each other. Therefore I do not believe that Palace would beat San Marino.

I hope that's cleared that up.

Our U21s played Japan U21s in preseason.

I reckon the entire Football League apart from Palace and even a few Conference sides would beat them.

I think they would be thrashed by all Premier League clubs most Championship clubs, even Blackpool and Bolton would manage a win against them.

I think Palace would give England a run for their money.

Agreed. Didn't England conced a goal against Sam Marino in a game in 2003? I remember watching the match and laughing like a drain...we were already out of whatever competition it was though I think. Euros 2004?

That phrase need to be used a lot more. Especially where posters are on fishing trips...

It was in 1993, a qualifier for the 1994 World Cup. We were already needing snookers by the time that game came round, I think we needed to win by 8 or something, and Poland had to lose. San Marino went 1-0 up after 8 seconds. We won 7-1, still not enough though.

Its always been a complete waste of time having the likes of San Marino, Faroe Islands and (now) Gibralter clogging up these qualifying groups. They should have to pre-qualify against each other before they get so much as a SNIFF of being pitched into a group with the proper footballing nations.
