After so many years of mismanagement off the field, its good to see Worthing FC getting back on a better footing thanks to George Dowell. Also worth a mention is the achievement of the youth team who have reached the Third Round of the FA Youth Cup and have a home tie against Middlesbrough.

I like Worthing and wish them well, the mismanagement comes usually when they hit a little bit of success and the manager, his staff and the fans demand more funds, more players and everyone becomes quite intoxicated with a smell of that success, its then when the board need to stay focussed, realistic and reign in the expectation.

The manager then leaves as do his best players and the fans start moaning at the board that have just made a reasonable decision.

So good luck to all the clubs currently doing quite well and to all those appointed to run them !!

I was told, dont know if it was true, but the team that Barry LLoyd had success with were all on over £200 per week.playing for Worthing plus their normal day jobs.

Which tier of English football are they in?

Always had a sort spot for Worthing since the glory days of Barry Lloyd's time as manager.

Blimey: you certainly trumped my 'Athenian League 1960s' ace! My era was Phil Tidy, Brian Cudmore, Mick Streeter and club captain Wilf Hugill (who to my enormous pride went out with my older sister!). You don't get many 'Wilfs' playing these days.....................

Sorry, my eyes playing tricks, I read that as MILFS. :D

Level 8 - Ryman League Division One South (which is the Isthmian League).

For comparison purposes, Whitehawk and Eastbourne Borough play at level 6 (National League South, sponsored by Vanarama), and Lewes and Bognor Regis Town play at level 7 (Ryman League Premier Division), although Bognor currently lie 2nd and Lewes are bottom and 12 points adrift of safety.

They were on a good screw for non league football I know because my mate Steve Guille played for them just after the Mick Edmunds/Cornwall era. I'm pretty sure after coming second in the Ryman Premier after Sutton ?? there was talk of them being invited into the Conference but I think they declined as the club wasn't on a strong enough footing for that grade at that time(or any time since)

It was to do with the ground not being up to a conference standard, the same applied to Sutton, and Wycombe who finished 3rd went up.

After a few years Wycombe made it to the football league.

IMO, that era of football from a non-league perspective locally, was arguably the best we've seen.

Worthing were formidable under Lloydy
Bognor weren't far behind under Pearce.

Hastings Utd were in the Southern League challenging with Crawley.

County League wise Littlehampton had great players in Steve Piper, Kevin Hotston, Kevin Keehan, Ian Cole and Herbie Smith, with Ricky Sopp and Richard Tiltman, the latter two went on to star for Worthing.

Whitehawk had Gerry Fell and Geard.

Attendances were pretty good as well.

Yes good post. Night games at Worthing with crowds around the thousand mark were really good. The hot dogs were great as well.

I've just checked and you are right ! Concerning that he is deep in Palace country, and also his first half performance meant he was responsible for at least 2 of the goals which were very soft.

Forgot to say Worthings big lad up front got the assist on 4 of the goals. Bit of a temper on him though
I know a few Leafe fans who went to the game, they highly rate our 17 year old keeper, apparently a few Prem scouts have been looking at him despite the fact that he is yet to keep a clean sheet.

Don't forget that while the Leafe is deepest darkest Palace land it is also where the Albion host an academy which is fast growing with an extra trading night recently added.

That's good coming from the dark side to the right side

He was with Jack Pierce at Bognor and then played for that really good Littlehampton side. Wick and East Preston but don't remember Ferring.
He had the video of him scoring the winner against Exeter on Match of the day for Bognor but taped over it with a porn film. If you knew him that wouldn't surprise you. He's still Worthings most expensive signing at about 4/5 k and as he admits a complete waste of money.

Did Mick Cornwell go to Brighton, Hove, & Sussex ? I am pretty sure we were in the same year - we had an annual grudge match.

I think Mick Edmunds was in our year as well. Anyone know what school he went to ?

Mixed him up with Wick and East Preston who were both managed by the old Littlehampton manager, whose name alludes me. I know Justin Thorpe from Midhurst played in the same team

Just remembered it was Carl Stabler
