As for Saunders, I wish he had stayed, thought he was a good player, but his record (21 games in 72 matches) was hardly outstanding. He was out of contract at the end of the 1987 season so likely to go anyway.
Lets not re-write history. Saunders looked a player of great potential and none of the Albion fans I knew who followed the club at the time were surprised that he went on to make it at the top level. I assume Lloyd was under pressure to sell. My understanding is that Oxford expected to pay 200K for him and were shocked when Lloyd asked for so little. At the same time Oxford paid Aldershot considerably more for Martin Foyle - a striker of less ability.
