Stokes is on for his first bowl of the game and the first ball is a bit of a loosener that Trumper drives through the covers. It looks a certain four but some brilliant chasing from Anderson, supported by Botham keeps it down to three.

Waugh now facing with one for his 50 and that's it, flicked off his pad down to fine leg for four.

No, the umpire has signalled leg byes so he has to wait.

WICKET! He tries to bring his 50 up in style by crashng it through the covers but Botham has been placed at a very short cover and takes a brilliant catch low down. That ball was travelling

183-5

As ever Stokes breaks the logjam. Sadly doesn't that mean we have Gilchrist at the crease?

Maybe we'll get lucky and it's 2005 Gilchrist who can't buy a run?

That was good captaincy from Hammond, Waugh had played a few shots uppishly but Stokes may have produced extra bounce.

Gilchrist has come in and promptly hit the first ball for four, smacking it through the covers and then scampers a sharp single. Trumper is not so quick on his feet and could have been in trouble if Hobbs' throw had hit.

That was an eventful Stokes over

188-5

It's only ten minutes to tea but Gilchrist is not playing for the break, he's straight driven Barnes for four and followed that by an extraordinary slog sweep into the crowd for the first six of the game.

Trumper's getting into the act too. He's driven Stokes sweetly through the covers - that's the shot of the day so far

Australia have passed 200. 204-5 with just one over to go until tea

And no fireworks in the last over before tea. Trumper takes a single, Gilchrist pushes a gentle two and it's tea with Australia at 207-5

I think England will be happy with that, the pitch is playing a lot easier now and this looks like a decent batting wicket when the sun's out. If Gilchrist gets going, the situation could change but I think England would be pleased if they were batting at any point today. And if they got Australia out for under 300, they'd be delighted

You are more of an optimist than me, think England have let them off the hook and 300 plus looks very likely. And then we will go in with 10 overs or so this evening and lose a couple of wickets...

We're back after tea. Are Australia going to try to build on this score and take it easy?

Gilchrist soon answers that question. After Trumper takes a single off the first ball of Stokes' over, Gilchrist smacks the first ball through mid-on for four and follows with a square drive for another. He sneaks a single off the last ball to keep the strike

217-5

Oh shit here it comes, who is bowling with Stokes at the moment?

A rare maiden as Gilchrist treats a Barnes over circumspectly.

And after the fireworks of the previous over, Stokes' next over passes with just a couple of singles off it

219-5

I fancy a bit of KP spin (seeing as the idiot selectors didn't pick Swanny).

More steady bowling from Barnes who's still doing a bit with the ball, just a single from it

And now it's Stokes to Gilchrist who's champing at the bit after that over from Barnes. The first ball is pushed firmly for two, he tries to do the same off the second but it's a superb stop by Hobbs in the covers.

But Gilchrist is not to be thwarted and cracks the next ball through mid-off. That went like a tracer bullet

What does Stokes do now?

Oh, this is horrible. I think he was trying a slower ball out of the back of the hand but it went very, very wrong. It's a slow full toss that Gilchrist wallops somewhere in Row Z. He goes into the 40s.

What's the fastest test hundred? Looks like Gilchrist is going for it

233-5

Gilchrist fancies Barnes now and drives him, slightly uppishly, through mid-on for four. That's 45 now and he's looking in form.

And that's it, he brings up his 50 with another six. That's a beautiful shot, straight over the bowler's head,.

He tries to repeat the shot ... and he's BOWLED. Maybe there was an edge but the stumps are flying everywhere and Gilchrist is on his way for 51

KP was dropped.I had him but the head of the selectors didn't want to play him

Typical KP. Managed to fall out with an entirely fictitious team.

Miller in,.another batsman who doesn't hang around. Exchanges a word with his old mate Denis Compton at mid-off - perhaps discussing what nightclub they're going to tonight.

He sees off the rest of Barnes over and Australia are 243-6
