Underwood continues to be tidy and Bradman helps himself to a single. Stokes to bowl the last over of the day and there’s no drama – Bradman helps the ball to third man and Smith sees out the over. That’s stumps

Close of play: Australia 137-2 (Bradman 54 Smith 40, overs 38)

Scorecard

Australia
Hayden retired hurt 9
Trumper b Larwood 25
Bradman not out 54
Ponting lbw b Larwood 5
Smith not out 40
Extras 4
Total 137-2

Bowling
Larwood 12 2 33 2
Anderson10 1 31 0
Botham 6 1 27 0
Stokes 7 1 38 0
Underwood 3 1 4 0

Australia have made steady progress and these two look well set but they still 366 behind – that’s a long way to go. An early wicket in the morning would put England firmly in the driving seat. If these two are still batting at tea … that spells trouble for England

England's game to lose, although we have had much practice in doing it over the Years!

No doubt Bill Frindall will know how many Test Matches have been lost after posting a 500 plus runs first dig?

I know: it's six. England rather famously contrived to lose in Adelaide in 2006/7. One is a bit of a cheat though - England won in 1967/68 against the WIndies when Sobers made an incredibly generous declaration and gave the game to England

Oh God I should have remembered Adelaide, was working nights that week and recall crowing over Collingwoods Double Ton to an Aussie Site Engineer...

I was way out on this - it's happened 15 times. I'd forgotten Bangladesh v NZ when BD scored 595 and lost!
It's only happened to England twice though. Guess who scored who scored a heap of runs the first time it happened?

Presume it must have one of the Greats such as Hammond, Hobbs or Sutcliffe way back when?

I'm not going onto Cricinfo and cheating! :lolol:

I give up, its been a long day and had a knackering 3 and a half hour drive back from Northants, put me out of my misery!

Bradman, could it have been anyone else?

I'm working out tomorrow's play while listening to Kraftwerk

You are doing a fine and much appreciated job.

My Last paying work today so I'm now in lockdown for God knows how long - this Test Series may keep me sane...

Have posted my feelings about Kraftwerk on the dedicated thread, the alternative Beatles.

I'm on my last paying job too - it's not good out there.

I see you're a Krautrock fan too: I was a massive, really massive fan of Can - saw them six times - but Kraftwerk were close behind them. This is a sad day

Morning Richie, morning all

Welcome to a cloudless Lord’s. The ground is more than three-quarters full already such is the level of anticipation. The good news for Australia is that Matthew Hayden has passed a fitness test and is available to bat.

It’s Larwood to get us under way from the Pavilion End – he bowled from the Nursery End yesterday. Bradman likes scoring early and he pushes through the covers for a single. Smith to face and this is an interesting field: Hammond has got a leg slip and a leg gully in place. They obviously feel that Smith is susceptible to balls on the leg stump – Larwood’s pace and the Lord’s slope are going to help here. And immediately Larwood gets the ball rising off a length, Smith can’t keep it down but it flies past Stokes’ hand and clatters to the boundary. The plan nearly worked to perfection.
If you can’t bowl them out, knock them out – Larwood’s next ball has Smith on the floor as he takes evasive action. Nothing more from the over as he gets right in line.
It’s Botham from the other end, he got more swing than Anderson yesterday and he gets some more straight off, beating Bradman with a jaffa – that swung late. Bradman plays back and solidly but carves the last ball for two through the covers.

Round Two of Larwood v Smith. There’s nothing much to worry the batsman – the bowling is fast and straight but Smith plays him confidently enough. That one rears up though and, again, Smith can’t keep it down but it hurtles between Stokes and Compton for another boundary – that’s the problem with two close catchers, there’s a massive gap if it gets through. Hammond has realised this and Compton goes back to the fence.
There are no fireworks from Botham’s over – just another single for Bradman.

Australia 149-2 (Bradman 58 Smith 48 overs 42)

Larwood to Bradman now and that’s a delicious shot for four. Bradman’s almost on one knee as he creams it through the covers. There’s a single too but Smith can handle the rest of Larwood’s over.
Botham is mixing it up more, swinging it both ways. Bradman doesn’t time that at all – it was meant to be a straight drive but flies through the on-side for two.

Australia 156-2 (Bradman 65 Smith 48 overs 44)
