It’s Anderson to get us under way from the Pavilion end. That’s loose, outside the off stump and Hayden gets us off the mark with a four down to the Tavern Stand. That’s better though, it flies down the slope and just beats the bat.
At the other end, it’s Larwood versus Trumper – this should be an interesting meeting. Trumper likes to get off the mark straight away and almost walks down the wicket, helping himself to three.

Larwood’s building up some pace now … and Hayden’s been hit. He sinks to the ground, that’s nasty – hits him somewhere around the chest area and he’s not wearing a guard. He walks around a bit but looks a bit winded – the physio is on but I think he’s all right That was a brute of a ball from Larwood. And the final ball’s a yorker that he does well to dig out.

Anderson again, and that’s a beautiful shot – Trumper’s on to it like a ballet dancer, and it’s stroked through the covers for four and then it’s a single to long leg. Hayden pushes one and steals the strike, he may regret that.

Larwood again and that’s quick, seriously quick, It’s an inside edge that just misses the stumps and wrong-foots Prior for four more. Larwood has a skiddy action, there’s no steep bounce but he’s hard to pick. And Hayden doesn’t pick this, it rises, hits his head with an almighty clang, flies over Prior’s head while Hayden is on the ground again. The physio’s on but this doesn’t look good. And, indeed, Hayden’s walking off – drama in just the fourth over.

Australia 21-0 (Hayden retired hurt 9, Trumper 8, Bradman 0, overs 4)

After that excitement, the next over just sees a single from Trumper as Anderson gets into his groove. Larwood to Trumper, who looks like he relishes the challenge; no drama though as he gets into line and keeps the ball out. There’s a single to mid-on and then Bradman gets off the mark with a couple through point.

Australia 25-0 (Trumper 10, Bradman 2, overs 6)

Jimmy’s right on the money now and Trumper can only play out the maiden. Larwood seems to up his pace for Bradman but he’s played confidently enough, flicking the last ball away for four through fine leg. This is now the last over before tea and Trumper plays it calmly enough, just the single from it – time for tiffin.

Australia 30-0 (Trumper 11, Bradman 6, overs 9)

Nothing much has happened since tea. I assume that Larwood was thrown some raw steak as he’s got both Bradman and Trumper hopping around a bit. But neither has been seriously hurt; although they both taken a couple of blows and Trumper has had an edge through slips. Anderson at the other end is as smooth as silk and has had a couple of mistimed shots but no real fireworks.
The news from the Aussie camp, is that Hayden has been taken to hospital for a precautionary X-ray. He’s apparently passed his HIA check but the medical staff want to make sure all’s well. The story is that, all being OK, he should be able to bat tomorrow.

Australia 47-0 (Trumper 21 Bradman 13, overs 16)

That’s the first loose one that Anderson has bowled and Bradman cracks it through the covers to bring up the 50, he pushes one off his legs for two more.
Larwood again and Trumper smacks him through mid-on – that was a fine shot. But he can’t do anything about that, it’s ripped his off stump out of the ground. That was a mighty quick delivery.

Australia 57-1 (Trumper b Larwood 25, Bradman 19 Ponting 0, overs 18)

It’s still Anderson and Bradman clips him away for a single and Punting gets off the mark with a cover boundary. He keeps the strike with a single.
Larwood to Ponting and that skids off the bat to the third man boundary – Ponting didn’t know much about that. He doesn’t know much about this one either, he’s pinned on the back foot plumb in front. No review and Punter’s walking off

Australia 63-2 (Ponting lbw b Larwood 5, Bradman 20 Smith 0 overs 20

It’s Beefy time and his first ball’s a bit of a loosener that Bradman cracks square for a four. And that’s four more, through midwicket. Bradman finishes off with a single to nick the strike to face the fiery Larwood.
There’s nothing of note though. Bradman is rock solid and plays out a maiden.
Smith faces Botham and gets off the market with his trademark on-drive – that’s a two. And runs the ball down to third man for a single.
Larwood is on again for his eighth over since tea but he’s beginning to tire now – his pace is dropping and Smith drives through mid-off for four and helps himself to another couple wide of mid-on. Time for drinks

Australia 81-2 (Bradman 29 Smith 9, overs 24)

Botham bowling better now and is beginning to hoop some away, Bradman watches carefully and just takes the single. Stokes is replacing Larwood at the Nursery End but he’s too short and that’s cracked in front of the scoreboard for four. Bradman then pushes wide of mid-off for another single and Smith finishes the over with four through mid-on.

Australia 91-2 (Bradman 35 Smith 13, overs 26)

Back home now & catching up, love the Bill Frindall reference, it stands to reason of course that he would be Fantasy Scorer! :lolol:

Larwood for Barnes seems to have worked...

Yeah, it wasn't my intention to do that but I wondered how big a partnership they were having ... and I found a wonderful site that gives the partnership for any team against any opponent on any ground. I'll be making good use of it

And if Richie is commentating, I want Bill to be my scorer

Bradman plays Botham with care and that’s a maiden. Stokes is tidier now and beats Smith with a beauty that seams away. There’s a big shout for lbw now, umpire Bowden turns it down but England want a look at this.
It looks good: impact in line but only just clipping – umpire’s call.
Smith recovers by hitting the next one for two but gets the final ball horribly wrong, he doesn’t get anything like enough on it – and it’s dropped! That’s been put down by Compton at square leg. That was a real chance.

Australia 93-2 (Bradman 35 Smith 15, overs 28)

Botham continues to be tidy although Bradman and Smith help themselves to a couple of singles each from his over. Stokes looks lively against Smith and that’s slashed away via a thick edge for four – that’s the hundred up

Australia 101-2 (Bradman 37 Smith 21, overs 30)

Talking of commentators, is it the same team as Trent Bridge?

Bradman has had enough of being tied down by Botham and cover drives him for four and then comes down the pitch to straight drive him for another. And that’s two more, through mid-wicket.
Stokes continues to Smith and this helped around the corner for one, Bradman nicks the strike with another single.

Australia 113-2 (Bradman 48 Smith 22, overs 32)

Underwood replaces Botham at the Pavilion End and he’s right on the money: Bradman’s itching for a 50 but can’t get him away. Stokes over-pitches to Smith and that’s smacked through extra cover for four and that’s a single in the same area. Bradman flicks him to long leg for one

Australia 120-2 (Bradman 49 Smith 27, overs 34)

And this time Bradman does get Underwood away, that’s two through the covers – and his 50 - and then a single wide of mid-on, Smith repeats the shot and the result and keeps the strike.
That’s wide and short by Stokes and clattered away for four by Smith, its short again and this time it’s smashed through mid-wicket and Smith straight drives the last ball of the over for another four.

Australia 135-2 (Bradman 52 Smith 40, overs 36)
