Tate takes on Warne and that's a magnificent six - two more of those and England are home.

He tries again but it's the googly: he's come down the pitch looking to smear it long on but he's beaten all ends up and Gilchrist pulls off the stumping

Tate st Gilchrist b Warne 10

Anderson squeezes the single and it's Botham v Warne. He looks for the single off the last ball but he hits it too well that's four

241-8 (Botham 29 Anderson 1) Overs 69

Anderson faces Lillee and is beaten by a beautiful outswinger. But he scampers a single to give Botham the strike

There's a single on offer but Botham turns it down ... and again.

Fifth ball: and he can't do anything about this - a fast inswinging yorker. He does well to keep it out

And he can't do anything abou the final ball either - that's a vicious bouncer that Gilchrist has to leap to catch.

Anderson wants the single but Botham is on the floor evading that and it's no go. It's all down to Anderson v Warne

242-8 (Botham 29 Anderson 2)

Six to win - one blow will do it. Is Anderson going to risk or is he going to try to give Botham the strike.

He has a swing off the first ball but it's missed - if that had connected, it would have been all over.

Now he tries to score the single, he looks to run it down to third man but that bounces and turns and can only steer into the hands of Border at slip

242-9 Anderson c Border b Warne 2

Barnes trudges slowly to the wicket. He needs to survive four balls - he's surely not going to try to score the runs. Nearly everyone is around the bat now - there's a deep mid-wicket and a third-man but everyone else is close in.

His first ball is met with a firm straight bat and patted down the pitch.
The next ball is a sharp leg break that beats the bat - two more to face

And that's the googly, he plays outside it, it loops off the pad, into the air and is caught. The entire team celebrate and Bowden gives it out

Barnes reviews immediately - I'm not sure whether that's certainty or optimism

Eight wickets to spinners in the fourth innings - one only occasional - and England didn't pick one!

England had chances to win that: they had them 87-4 and let them get 300 (as near as dammit) and they dropped Bradman when he was on 7

And Jakarta's right - Botham should have chanced it in that penultimate over

Still, Lord's next - plenty of time to put things right

Too many got a start, then got out.
Only one half century is disappointing.
When is the next Test?

Well played Gwylan - you have kept us sad cricket bores(how others see us) entertained

It's been fun to do.

I originally thought of having England bowl them out for not very many but I wanted to have some sense of realism - you're not going to bowl a team with Trumper, Bradman and Smith (and an awkward sod like Waugh) out so cheaply. England had the idea of packing a side with seamers and bowling them out in the first day - which they did - but Australia amassed enough to make it challenging. And England didn't pick a spinner so struggled in the third innings - I think the way that I envisaged the match was really not far-fetched..

Next test is in a few days time. I have some work to do

We need a selection meeting for the England team. I'll start a new thread tomorrow for that.

Not sure sure we need to change the team, just a little more application with the bat, yes I'm looking at You Mr Gower...
I do. I think they definitely need a spinner and I think they should be looking at a genuine pace bowler. They had no answer when the cloud cover went and it was too easy for Australia

OK if we get Deadly or Swann back for spin who do we drop? If it is pace then it will have to be Larwood or Trueman. Again who do we drop?

83-7 for Warne, perhaps we should have selected Deadly after all.

Yes, my advice to selection panel went unheeded. Don't know why I bother.

Seem to recall we had this silly rule about only one player from each County which meant either Underwood or Knott, obviously would have both in reality.

Anyway what is our line up for Lord's? ???

As I see it, we have four choices for spinner

Swann - can go straight in with no juggling of team
Verity or Rhodes - can go straight in with no juggling of team
Underwood - would mean dropping Knott (possible if you put Prior in and replacing Tate with spinner)

( I discounted Laker as an option as we'd be loony to drop Hobbs)

The disadvantage of Swann is that he's an offie to a team full of right-handers but he's a better batsman than all (except Rhodes)

Underwood is a lousy batsman.

I also think we should pick a genuine speedster

Again, four choices
Trueman - can go straight in with no juggling of team (unless we pick Verity or Rhodes)
Larwood - can go straight in with no juggling of team (unless we pick Swann)
Snow - would need to drop Tate
Willis - would need to drop Barnes

I'll leave it to the selection committee

BTW Australia have made changes Border, Waugh and McGrath have been dropped (to comply with the two per state rule). There's no celebrating just yet, they've been replaced by Ponting, G Chappell and J Thomson
