Miller’s on at the other end and Stokes flicks him away for a four and then pinches the strike. McGrath’s not in the mood to give anything away though and it’s another maiden.
Knott’s facing Miller now and confidently steers him away for a four to get off the mark. He then scampers a single off the last ball to steal the strike. Stokes is confident that Knott can face McGrath

England 321-6 (Stokes 9 Knott 5) 84 overs

And Knott survives the over, not without a couple of playing and missing. Stokes faces Miller and pulls a short ball for four and then takes a quick single to face McGrath again
Stokes is looking to push the score along but McGrath bowls yet another maiden. Knott cuts Miller for two and sees out the rest of the over.
McGrath to Miller again. The left-hander plays him watchfully, flicking the penultimate ball of the over to long leg for a single. McGrath to Knott, it’s slightly short of a length but cramps the keeper up, it’s an inside-edge and the stumps are flying everywhere

England 328-7 (Stokes 15* Knott b McGrath 7) 89 overs

Stokes has it all to do now; another wicket tonight will be a disaster for England as Anderson and Barnes aren’t the best tailenders in the business. Fortunately, England’s number 9 is Tate – a player who did the double eight times. These really are the last batting pair and Stokes is playing watchfully now. He plays out a maiden from Miller.
Tate against McGrath and he gets off the mark with a single immediately. Stokes sees out the rest of McGrath’s over – only six overs left this evening, he doesn’t want to get out now.
But if the watchword is caution, Tate didn’t get the memo, he wallops Miller down to cow corner for four and then is beaten by outside the off-stump having a swing. Stokes comes down to have a word and it’s defence from now on.

England 333-7 (Stokes 15 Tate 5) 92 overs

McGrath finally bowls a loose delivery and Stokes gleefully slams it through mid-on for four. Tate is now more watchful against Miller and plays out a maiden.
Stokes does the same to McGrath, England will be grateful to get through without losing a wicket, Australia will be hopeful of having Lillee back tomorrow.
England 337-7 (Stokes 19 Tate 5) 95 overs

Forget all that, Tate creams Miller through the covers for four and swings him up in the air between Hayden and Bradman. Stokes comes down the wicket to have another word but Tate hammers the next ball away too – but it’s smartly stopped by Waugh at mid-off. Finally, he does play the last ball defensively.

Last over of the day, bowled by McGrath and that’s a beauty, it catches the edge of Stokes’ bat and flies to the third man boundary, over slips’ heads. Stokes completely lost that and he’s beaten again. McGrath making the ball talk now. There’s then a big shout for lbw as Stokes is struck in front but they decide against a review. Stokes flicks a single to long leg and Tate has one ball to face. It’s a peach – too good for Tate, a better batsman may have edged that but he survives to tell the tale.
That’s stumps with England at 348-7

Blimey those last few overs were torment. A useful but not decisive lead, that stupid run out may come back to haunt us.

If Lillee recovers and comes out firing tomorrow morning it could be over in a matter of a few balls.

That Botham always chokes against Australia, should have expected it.

Writing? Writing? This is REAL although in a parallel cricketing universe. Such as one I could bat and bowl a bit...

Funnily enough, I was making a cup of tea this afternoon and was wondering how the match was going. It took a few moments for it to sink in ...

OK Script is Stokes has to backed up by Tate to get a furious fifty, lofting Lillee for a huge six to get there.
