I appreciate what you're saying, Easy, but it's human nature to reproduce. What you are effectively saying is that these people should go "f*** it, I'm happy to see the end of my line, to leave no mark on this place, as long as it serves the greater good". I'm afraid people don't look at it that way.

Not suggesting they shouldn't reproduce, just that two kids maximum is enough ... and if there's not enough food to go round then it would appear to be sensible to have less mouths to feed. The way they appear to think now is "right, we're hungry, we're poor, no prospects ... I know, lets have lots of kids so they too can go hungry and live in poverty. Pretty damn stupid way of living in my opinion.

How do you limit them to two kids though? It works in China because they withold benefits for any more than one child; but there are no benefits in most of Africa. Are you seriously suggesting that you simply say "here is enough food for 4 people, if you have more kids, tough"?

Like I say, I actually agree with the general sentiment. I just don't think it's realistic to i) expect the populace to act that way or ii) think that there is a way that such a policy could be implemented.

They have loads of kids because they know damn well most of them probably won't see their 2nd birthday. "Insurance" innit.

Jesus Christ! :thud:

If you withdraw aid then millions upon millions of people will face almost instant death through no fault of their own. Still, it will help to concentrate their minds and teach them in the long run…

If you feel so strongly about it, then why don't you arrange to take personal responsibility of your taxation and refuse to pay it.

It would indeed help to concentrate their minds. Nothing else seems to have that effect.

And it would not be "no fault of their own". Who brought all the kids into the world to feed? They did.

And, yes, I'd love to take personal responsibility for where my tax dollars go. There'd be no foreign aid for a start, no troops abroad, no money going to the arts, no support for faith schools or any religious organisations. And that's without thinking too hard.

The way we invest in our old age through pensions is one thing, we're fortunate enough to have that choice. And I appreciate that is not a choice those starving in Africa have the luxury of. But when they are in no position to feed or provide for themselves, then bringing a child (multiple children) into the here and now over some notion that in 15-20 years time they'll be grown up and looking after you, to me, is selfish, foolish and irresponsible. Yes I know its easy for me to say, but thats just my opinion, and it comes to mind every time I see vast swathes of the populace in famine, with most of them tiny children who are suffering the most horrendous conditions, who have barely a hope in hell of making it.

I know they don't. But I honestly believe people in their situation should.

If people thought like that, the human race would have died out years ago.

My plan would be not to give them any food. They need to produce what they need to feed how ever many mouths they have. If they're starving, then they'd have to learn to have no kids until they could produce more food. If they had kids anyway they'd probably die. Produce food and maybe they could have a couple of kids. As I said earlier, it would sure focus their minds.

You'd be signing the death warrants of probably hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of people.

though to be fair, the constant relief "efforts" only delay and spread suffering. we cant bare to stand by and watch but all that a few thousand tons of grain does is let the kids survive until the next out break of cholera or malaria get them. throw in half hearted medical aid that allows many to survive untill they can procreate and you have a booming but sick population that can no longer sustain itself without expensive imports or handouts. It is our humanity that perpetuates the suffering, where really education and proper target investment is required.

I agree. But the world is happy to sit by and watch disease kill them, as long as they donate £10 once a year when we have lots of pictures of starving kids on the TV. Ask them to stop giving, and let nature take it's course (and that, in my opinion, is pretty much what it is), would not be okay with the vast vast majority of people.

One thing that really pisses me off are these families who are intent on setting a record for the number of children. You tend to see an article or two in the trashy newspapers (Metro etc.) and/or a series on TV. The families that have 12 and want more as they love babies etc. Why should the taxpayer fund £1,000s worth of child benefit, income benefit, housing benefit, medical expenses, school expenses, just because some idiots decide they want to collect babies.

Too true !!!
Stop all child benefit NOW - you want kids you pay for 'em

of course it is, thats the whole point. but you live with a nice welfare state, job oppurtunities and potential to fund a pension to see yourself through old age. If you live in many parts of Africa, the Indian subcontinent, SE Asia or parts of S. America, you dont have that privilage. you die if you are sick or too old to work, unless you have a large enough family to support you.

Sense at long last. Nail....bang...on...head.

Also, the over-population myth is just that....a MYTH !

Bollocks would it.
We're not ALL starving to death in some hopeless third-world flea-infested disease-ridden stinking hellhole slum like Somalia or Croydon.

Imagine how gutted you would be if you were a Somali illegal immigrant, who stowed away in a truck at Calais, and on getting out in England realised that you were in Croydon.
