current and former university students needed to answer this - basically interested to see what sort've ballpark figure i've got here

how many people had/have part time jobs whilst they were/are studying and more importantly how many hours a week were/are you doing?

the university reckon 10 at a push , i'm currently doing 28 1/2 and i'm scraping money together then!!! i can't afford to lose many if any!

28 1/2 is a lot of hours!

I didn't have a job...but I did quite a bit of volunteering for the Union (in exchange for beer vouchers). I also was a member of the RAF Volunteer reserve - not really a job, but it gave me a few quid a week.

I would say about half of my friends have/had jobs while studying. However, I don't know of anyone working anymore than 20 hours a week.

When I was there, I scheduled my uni days to go to as many lectures and tutorials on the same day, so I do 3 full days & work 2-3 days a week running a betting shop.

sussex uni used to recommend no more than 15 hrs a week, which on my job then netted about 100 quid or something.

It works both ways - if you want the cash, you can work all the free hours there are and still get the schoolwork done. Alternatively, if you choose to work less its always possible to make cutbacks and live on less money.

Personally I'd go for the less work, less cash option. As long as you've got enough to buy cider and weed for you and whoever you're trying to stick it inside on that particular night, you're laughing.

I didn't work in term time, too much fun to be had. Just used holidays for raking as much as dosh as possible.

I'm going to be doing about that - on top of 37.5hr week placement!!

I worked 20+ hours a week but I did a sociology degree

I do a minimum of 9 hours(all on Sunday), but hopefully will up that to 14 if I get my Uni timetable confirmed so I can work an afternoon shift in.

I find it is absolutely fine to do that much, one weekend day and one weekday evening hardly go amiss.

Never did any during term time (then again got a proper grant then).
Used to work in Hols, but even that was difficult doing a Geology Degree, as we were always on fieldwork.

Still, during my post-graduate time, used to get paid a tenner an hour (tax free) to demonstrate in practicals. Which usually invloved concentrating on the prettier females in the class.

I know it's no consolation to say this, but in the good old days when I was a university student and got a grant, with no fees to pay and no loans available, there was no need to get paid employment at all during term time. I had regular vacation work available back home in Birmingham, which paid for things like running a car and a decent summer holiday. Life was so much easier back then. We were able to live comfortably, drink stupidly and concentrate on whatever came our way in both the daytime and the evenings (including, occasionally, some studying).

I got to do some real paid teaching when I was a postgraduate student. Including a course called Incest and Exogamy. But that's another story.

Aber recommened that you do no more than 12 hours a week.

I work at the Union and do about 12-14 hours (when freshers week is over).

Are you at Sussex or Brighton Uni? Can you drive a digger or a crane? They might have a few jobs going by the university starting next autumn

I did about 6 or so hours a week - could probably have done more but I didn't really want to and I had enough money to get by. That's not the case this year though, the postgrad course I've just started is going to leave me with absolutely no time for work at all.
