'Work or lose home' says minister

It's been a while since I've been involved in a political debate, and heard this today, but to my amusement.

Unemployed council and housing association tenants should seek work or face losing their homes, housing minister Caroline Flint has suggested.
She said new applicants for social housing might sign "commitment contracts" pledging to seek employment.

In a speech, Ms Flint said: "Social housing should be based around the principle of something for something."

Shadow housing minister Grant Shapps said the idea was "meaningless" as it could not be legally enforced.

In her first speech as housing minister Ms Flint told the Fabian Society that she wanted to "begin a debate" about how to best serve the needs of people who live in social housing.

Shelter chief executive Adam Sampson says "What is being proposed would destroy families and communities and add to the thousands who are already homeless "

James Mac (whoever he is) says "Every unemployed person should be made to look for work, or have work given to them "

Do my eyes decieve me or are Labour actually doing something good?!?! No doubt it won't go through as someone will remind Labour that if they do this, they'll be no one left to vote for them!

Grown ups only on this thread please, and absolutely no Students  (purely for insurance reasons)

I would suspect that their would be so much red tape it could not be enforced ? Lets get real, human rights laws would stop that.

The majority of unemployed people that live in social housing claim housing benefit and pay virtually no council tax. There is no incentive whatsoever to get a job as they are better off staying at home and watching the TV. This proposal sends out a message that the taxpayers are fed up seeing these spongers getting every benefit going whilst hard working folk are overburdened with rising outgoings. There are around 2 million claiming incapacity benefit who basically have nothing wrong with them apart from being lazy bastards. These claimants should all be re-assessed and those found to be fit for work put back onto Jobseekers Allowance. This in turn would mean that they have to actively look for work and those who havent found anything after 3 months should be made to do voluntary or community placements if they want to retain their benefits and have a place to live.

In London village.
Frankly, it's tabloid pleasing drivel from a women who IMO looks like the back-end of a bus.

Totally agree with the idea but its irrelevant as it will never happen. Too many whingers and there will be too much concern about upsetting the wasters from the typical do gooders.

And I would!

It will never happen because it's simply unenforcable. Nothing to do with wasters, whingers and do-gooders. Dandyman is right - this is tabloid pleasing drivel. He is also wrong however, as I would still happily sink to the onions because she's a proper hottie by female politician standards.

Labour tried it b4 with the work or lose benefits scheme.
And listerning around the school playground to the parents wants from the local council it didnt work them.
Now I maybe flamed for my views but,
we have a minimum wage that all companies must pay
but why are poles, russians portugues comming over and getting jobs??
easy to say coz brits dont want those jobs, but why??
Is the min wage under what they can get in benefits??
And I have marriage relations who live in council housing and not worked for years but can afford to run cars and have a better standard of living to me,be it pub or cigs or where they shop?????????????
And I look at my wage packet and see tax,NI and add on my council tax, fuel tax to get to work and I am paying about 50% of my salery just in tax b4 food or holidays or VAT on luxuries??????

Since Local Authorities have a legal responsibility to house homeless people, it makes no sense to evict people from their housing stock, who they then would legally have to rehouse.

In addition, existing tenants would not agree to having their legally binding tenancy agreement being redrawn. So it could only apply to new tenants, which will make up a very low percenatge of occupants.

And boy in real life she is a stunner. She can vacate me anytime!
