Help!

My 17 year old son needs summer work experience. My first question as a recruiter is naturally "what do you want to do?", but, like myself at that age, he has absolutely idea. He is studying Business, Sociology and Photography at BHASVIC.

So, two questions that would help for inspiration.

1. What did you do for your work experience at school/college?

2. Do you know of anywhere in the Brighton area that offers work experience?

I worked at HSBC and experienced filling a cash machine, still one of the greatest moments in my life 💷

I did two. The first time I was supposed to work in a garage but I refused as it was too dirty; I ended up working at a bakery. Whilst the bakery was dusty I enjoyed it. Second time was in a factory at Bevan Funnell which made my hands really sore...it felt like my finger tips/prints had been sandpapered off. I was always destined to work in an office.

Went on two whilst at Tideway:
Brighton Libraries - included the main Brighton one plus a couple of days at Saltdean - don't remember anything from that one.
East Sussex County Council in Lewes - spent a week franking letters, rearranging paperclips and counting pencils before the lone male in the office took pity and introduced me to the pub lunch (The Swan in Southover if I remember correctly). The only worthwhile experience from either.

My wife went to Tideway and last week she was telling me about a thread on Facebook about what students at the school did for work experience.

Sussex, by the sea
Adams packing factory in small dole, it was tedious after 2 days, really boring stupid people. I lasted 3 weeks which was enough to buy a scooter (wreck)

edit, that wasnt work experience, it was a summer holiday job.

My dad's mate had a lithographic printers and print / stationary shop and I worked there. I also did a work experience day on the trains and at Three Bridges signal box when I was in Lower Sixth and had a regular evening job in the Co-op by the dog track on the fag counter or shelf filling and pulling pump trucks out of the stock room.

The train day was brilliant fun and I got a high mark for my report. The co-op was dull unless you got to pull a pump truck that had been over filled with light things like crisps and I was told (and this was good advice) that I should never consider printing as a career though I could just about manage photocopying.

Obviously now I work in financial technology.

On a serious note my lad did work experience last year (he's also at BHASVIC but doing A levels this year). He got some work experience at football coaching sessions via Ace Football Academy - Jamie might have a spot or two again. Although my lad is doing sports science as a BTEC so the experience was relevant to his studies.

In my youth I rang up several companies and asked if I could work for them for a month for no pay. That way I got experience with Architect, Plumber, Estatate Agent. Management side at M&S ,Solicitors ,Computor Co. Didnt end up with any of them but was great experience. Dont think you would be allowed to do that now Pity

Eldest son worked at Hove Lagoon for a week and the youngest a week at Galileo's restaurant in Hove (and he got paid for it!). They both asked the organisations directly as the school were rubbish at arranging anything. It really doesn't matter if it has any connection to what they want to do or the subjects they are studying. It's all about getting out into the big wide world.

I went to Blacklands Farm near East Grinstead and helped take groups of teenage girls abseiling, Canoeing etc and worked in the tuck shop. As a teenage boy, I found this tremendous 🍆
I got a job at a Quasar laser centre when I was 15, had keys and everything. Used to open it up and go in with my mates after clubbing with a case of beer, turned all the arcade games and pinball to free play, wobbled the vending machines a lot until the food dropped out. All running round, playing laser tag stoned in the night with some old school blasting out. Other perks were that the uv lights made dropped bank notes invisible so always found cash after hours and all the girls white underwear glow through their clothes too. What a gig that was.
Did have the old bill knock a few times

For my work experience at school, my dad managed to get me a job helping out the IT guy they used in his office. We went around various small offices in the Crawley/Horsham area installing and repairing computers, printers etc. As a nerdy teenager into computers, I loved it.

You are Will from the inbetweeners and I claim my £5

I don't think 'work experience' had been invented when I was at school
