Women driving

And no, this thread is not about women drivers, per se.

My question. Why is is that about 95% of the time (my estimate) when you see a man and a woman in a car the man is doing the driving?

Surely with equality of the sexes and all that women should want to take the wheel just as much as men.

But no. It appears that the man does the driving pretty much all of the time. Why?

The question will no doubt elicit some very amusing responses, but I'm also interested is some serious answers.

For a serious answer you need a serious question.

do you perceive the driver as the the one in controll and charge or the chauffeur?

The Economist did an analysis of this they called "The Trouser Index" which boiled down to who did the none essential driving when both where in the car and it came out as 80% male, but ignored the issue i first stated.?

Or another way of putting it, is driving work or a power display?

I do the driving when I'm in the car with the wife because I've passed my driving test and she hasn't !

I think your question falls down with the word "appears". I don't know if there's any actual research into this.

Good thread - when we go out my partner always drives - automatically without even asking whether I want to drive or not!!! Unless, we are going out for a drink or a meal with friends then we normally have the "who is having a drink" conversation beforehand. Normally, he drives so I can have a few drinks. He never seems to mind as he doesn't really drink alcohol.

Very occasionally if he has worked a few nights and is knackered and we go out he will throw the keys at me and say "you drive hun, I'm tired".

He says I am a confident driver so it can't be the fact that he is shit scared every time I drive? unless he just doesn't want to offend me!!

Same with me. I suspect, though, that it's because men tend to enjoy driving more than women (though I know women who enjoy driving and men who don't). I may be wrong though.

I think you're correct to a degree. I know some men who detest driving as it's part of their job and therefore not pleasurable ( boredom I guess? ). Conversely, I know a few female petrolheads that would give Penny Mallory a run for her money!

I certainly love driving and I'm pretty relaxed behind the wheel. I'm one of those strange people who'd quite happily drive the entire M25 just for fun. My wife however, even if she did get her driving licence, would be like an assassin behind the wheel. She's quite short tempered and stressy ( due to her illness mainly ) and would happily run people over if she could get away with it.
She readily admits that driving " isn't her thing "........

In my parents case, my Mum always drives when they're in the car together because she doesn't trust my Dad.

My wife often drives as she wants to get to the destination a lot quicker.

Years of men telling them that 5 inches is actually 9 inches makes it difficult for them to park successfully.

Same. I guess we are unusual though.

I drive most of the time as I am quicker to nip around town than my husband is. He drives me mad as he will sit in a queue - I won't if there's a safe choice (other lane or different route). Although he's a quick driver on a clearer road, at busier times of day he won't use the outside lane very often and doesn't know the short cuts that I learnt when I drove for a living for a year.
