Just heard this on the radio & found this report online from the Croydon't Advertiser innit

A woman was stabbed by a boy who she thinks was as young as 10 - after she refused to give him and his friend a cigarette.

Having been turned down, the boys tried to grab the cigarette she was smoking from her mouth.

When she resisted one youngster then slashed her across the arm.
The mindless assault happened at around 2.20pm on Wednesday close to Selhurst train station, in Selhurst Road

Police were called to the scene and an ambulance took the woman to Mayday Hospital for treatment

The two suspects fled the scene and police are now appealing for witnesses to come forward.

A police source told the Advertiser: “The two kids apparently approached the woman and asked her for a cigarette.

“But when she said no one of them slashed her across the arm.
“It is understood they used either a Stanley knife or a sharp razor blade.
“The cut didn't go right to the bone, but it was still a pretty deep cut and the woman was left in deep shock.”

A police spokesman added: “The victim received a cut to her arm after two boys attempted to steal a cigarette out of her mouth.

“It is understood a knife was used in the assault. The suspects are described as black and aged between 10 and 11 years old.”

One worker at nearby Selhurst Depot said: “The police were here this afternoon and I saw a woman with a bandage around her arm.
“They had taken her inside the station and were talking to her. She looked very shook up.”

Danny Foley, landlord of the nearby Selhurst Arms, branded the attack “appalling and disgusting”.
He said: “In many respects I'm not surprised. We get a lot of crime down here.
“But when you consider the age of the suspects, it really is quite appalling and disgusting.
“The parents have a lot to answer for too - what on earth are two 10-year-old doing wandering around by themselves with a knife? What has Britain come to?”

Jason Grant, district manager for Thornton Heath and Selhurst added: “It is very concerning to think of kids as young as this brazenly approaching a woman in broad daylight and using a knife on her over a cigarette.
“It seems kids who commit crimes are getting younger and younger these days.
“The area surrounding the station is very isolated, which is a problem.”

Croydon CID are investigating.

10 years old, smoking and carrying knives :nono:
Surely the govenemt can do something to stop youths carrying knives and to stop children from smoking.

they do. its just the way they do it is crap. giving out leaflets/having talks will solve nothing punishment for having knives/stabbing that is more than a caution-slap on the wrist and prisons that are cells with NO luxury would also be a deterent. the main culprit i see is the goverment, encouraging parents to both work - they then cannot keep an eye on what their children are up to.
also kids activities are being lost in cost cutting and house building excercises (ie the plan to demolish Burgess Hill f.c) by doing this they create more homes and yet give youngsters (and adults alike) less facalities

I believe Simon Jordan is demanding at least £5million compensation for him and threatening to quit as Palace chairman unless he gets the full value for him.

Knife crime down 14% this year. Fact according to official police statistics.

Tabloid newspaper bullshit reporting up many %.

Well I don't know on what basis the police stats are put out, but anedotally, I certainly haven't dealt with any more knife related incidents this year than any other time.

I haven't found knives on anybody I've nicked for anything else either, so from a personal point of view, I do have some suspicions about the authenticity of some of the newspapers' stats. The whole knife crime issue is something of a cause celebre amongst the tabloids in particular at the moment, a bandwagon which even the Argus is jumping on (stating that "something must be done" without actually suggesting any useful solution to the problem).

The other thing to remember about that Croydon story is that, take it from me, people are notoriously bad judges of age where kids are involved. I went to a burglary a few weeks back where the witness described the perpetrators as between 10-11 years of age.

When we caught them a few minutes later, the individuals involved were actually between 15 and 18.

Not that it makes it any better to be stabbed by a 15 year old as opposed to a ten year old, I know, but just so you don't think all primary school kids are going round tooled up...

Next week it will be 'Dangerous dogs'' again followed by soft sentencing for paedophiles in september.
