Right, my laptop's being gay, i dont think the wireless switch is on- where might i find it??

This means you can quickly block any wireless traffic if you are not certain of your security settings, and may be at risk from somebody trying to view your machine, or to make use of your broadband connection.
Perhaps you have turned it off without realising?

Try taking the laptop upto the nearest pub that you know offers free wireless broadband, if it works there automatically then you know its not the laptop - and hey presto you also get a good excuse for a quick pint!!
