I had a lucky escape the other night. My wife came down the stairs convinced I was watching a porn film. Fortunately, in the nick of time I switched channels to the women's tennis and blamed all the grunting and wailing on a particularly long rally between Sharapova and Cibulkova.

Is Sharapova DRUNK?

0-3 down after SIX minutes. Lost her service game to 0, with 2 double faults. All over the place.

Do all Eastern European schoolgirls now get fed straight into a big tennis machine at birth?

And she is the 5th seed, which tells you all you need to know about the womens game at the moment.

Or about the old gimmers who do the seeding.

Agree about the standard of play being very high at the moment in the mens but I think the womens Grand Slams are exciting because it's not easy to pick a winner. I think anyone of the quartet of Maria Sharapova, Victoria Azarenka, Sabine Lisicki or Petra Kvitova all stand a chance and are decent young players.

womens grand slams are not exciting
