the weather mostly. there are lots of lovely places in the uk and if someone could turn the sun on for us i would consider it, but all of us cooped up in a holiday cottage in cornwall while the heavens rain down on us sounds horrific.
we are not holidaying in the eurozone - though our holidays were booked/decided upon pre-credit crunch stuff.

If you do stay in the UK you could take a look at MyCottageHoliday.co.uk- our holiday cottage review website. We've had an amazing response, with nearly 1,000 cottages added by this weekend, but we're still short of holidaymakers reviews.
If you have stayed in a UK self catering property in the last couple of years why not add a review of the place you stayed at? After all, if you were looking for a review before you book your next holiday cottage, you'd want to know what people like yourself thought about it.

We have free accomodation in Cape Verde and love the Red Sea Riviera, but the thought of taking my one year old on a five-six hour flight fills me with dread.

I spent a long weekend In Ludlow (Shropshire) last year - has 3 Michelin Starred restaurants, wonderful Black and white trail with some beautiful villages and great pubs lovely friendly service and real pride in their town, I agree about the weather but would say you are more likely to meet the English you want to avoid when you go to any holiday resort abroad and there are some terrific places in this country - Lake district, Edinburgh, Highlands, Bath, York, Welsh Hills and many more. I would take TRHK advise and research a trip in the UK because this is one of the most beautiful countries in the world.

We are doing the Sun's cheap holiday promotion for the second time. We selected Devon but are waiting to find out exactly where the holiday will be.
Why? With a toddler we can't afford much and due to my lack of passport we can't go anywhere else anyway! There are so many places in the UK worth visiting I don't feel the need to go abroad anyway - not even for the weather. We will make it a top week away for our little boy and that's all that matters.

good for you. I wont take you up on your recommendation to research a trip in the uk thankyou.
I have visited almost every part of the uk on holiday in my long life and know very well the nice areas of this sceptered isle.
However IMHO there is nowhere in the UK that can match Santorini as an example.
This year we are picking up a cruise liner ( american one)from Barcelona and making our way around the mediterranean ending up in Venice. the service is first class, you would not see an english ( or scottish) football shirt clad yob, the weather is ( has been) fantastic and the food is quite delish.

Sounds fantastic - hope you have a great trip and I will put Santorini on my list of places to research _ I haven't visited
all the nice places on this sceptered isle but would like to. I think the service in this country is an issue but I do think it has improved in the last 5 years and I can't afford an overseas holiday this year and I have a four year old so i want to visit somewhere new in the UK

I always feel really sorry for the UK travel industry. Every single year when more people decide to holiday at home, whether it be due to Airport Chaos or Economic Downturn, the Summer weather seems to get extra shitty to ensure the maximum number of people are put off repeating the experiment. Don't seem fair.
