Will our season be defined by the first 6 games of 2017?

If we are 2nd or 1st on Mon 6th Feb, I just can't see us not getting automatic promotion!

Fulham v Brighton & Hove Albion Mon 2 Jan

Finally finding their stride, this Fulham side recently destroyed early pace setters Huddersfield by smashing 5 past them. They may lack consistency but this fans' favourite away day is fraught with danger for Chris and his team.

Preston North End v Brighton & Hove Albion Sat 14 Jan

Two shots - Two goals. Will they get another draw (or worse) against us by being given two goals? They've had some great results sinking both Villa and Norwich but can they get luck against us twice?

Brighton & Hove Albion v Sheffield Wednesday Fri 20 Jan

Gifted a man advantage and an evil invisible alien force field around their goal in last season's play-off, our superior class finally counted for a 1st win at Hillsborough last month. Having had their title of 'most massive club in the Championship' rudely stolen from them by Newcastle, they're going to want to grab 3 points at the Amex to cement their play-off charge. A tricky fixture.

Brighton & Hove Albion v Newcastle United Sat 28 Jan

The title favourites visit the Amex. Will they be able to exploit our weakness at defending set-pieces again?

Huddersfield Town v Brighton & Hove Albion Thu 2 Feb

Early leaders Huddersfield have beaten the likes of Newcastle and made a fantastic start. Can they keep their team fit? Can they keep hold of their best players in the window? Can they stay in the top 6? A loss at the Amex should mean that their top 2 ambitions are put to an end but you never know.

Brentford v Brighton & Hove Albion Sun 5 Feb

Another team to have beaten the Albion this season. Brentford were tactically perfect at th Amex but can they repeat this at home? Will we have learnt from our defensive mistakes and will the mercurial Alan Judge be available to help pluck our feathers? This is a tough fixture and a draw could be a fine result.

Let's get 50 points by the halfway stage and see where that takes us.

Aim high.

Our season will defined by the next 30 games. Yes I know it's obvious. It's the banana skin matches that bother me, for example the 2-0 defeat at Rotherham last season. So far all our results have been fair reflections of the game apart the Preston match when we threw two points away when we were well in command.

Game on Friday...few others after that...January! Bit far ahead is it not?

Just looking at last season when we stopped winning and got 3 points from a possible 21 and wondering if it could happen again (it won't).

Derby 2 - 2 Brighton
QPR 2 -2 Brighton
Brighton 0 - 3 Middlesborough
Brentford 0 - 0 Brighton
Brighton 0 - 1 Ipswich
Brighton 0 - 1 Wolves
Rotherham 2 - 0 Brighton

Ah i see where you are coming from...but we've got a few interesting games coming up..Leeds/Fulham at home both in good form..away at Bardiff ..Warnocks a wiley old dog...away at Brum is a tough old chestnut ..away at Blackburn..always a bit of a physical battle.
Will our season be defined by the next six games?

Fascinating insight that you have given us, but I do feel that we could make these sort of arguments for every part of the season -next 5, the 3 after that, all games in March etc . It is too hard to tell and probably best to look at each game as it comes up. But thanks, anyway.

Brighton / Hove actually
I think our season will fall into two categories:

Success = Automatic Promotion.
Or
Failure = Championship next season.

These our my two definitions of what will happen.

I think you can only define a moment in our season when the season has finished.

If we get promoted we will probably look back and see the thrashing of Norwich as a statement of intent, followed by a wonder goal that all players dream of scoring and the type of goal that only other teams score. These games have certainly defined the first third of our season because we have breathing space between us and third. If we only get 5 points from the next 3 games and Huddersfield win all theirs, we will still be in second.

All we need to do is equal or better the results of the teams who are directly below us and we should maintain or stretch that five point gap, or six points if we include goal difference.

So in the future if we are promoted the last two games will have defined our season because it puts us in a great position on every level. If we don't get promoted something unforeseen in the future will have defined our season for us like injuries which doesn’t bear thinking about.

Can someone please explain what 'defining a season' means? This meaningless phrase has crept into every day lexicon as if it is somehow profound.

If it is meant that the first 6 games of 2017 will actually define whether or not we get promoted, it's clearly bollox. We could win all 6 6-0 then lose 10 in a row. As a reminder we went 6 games without scoring during Dec/Jan last season. Perhaps someone thought that 'defined our season'.

That well worn mantra 'a game at a time' needs to be trotted out yet again...

Stop over-thinking guys. Just take it one game at a time. We've just gained 11 ELEVEN points on the team who were 2nd in 4 games. That's a reminder of how quickly things can change. Keep calm, we will lose some, draw some etc - just stay calm!

Good question.

Tonight's postponement feels like the 3 dropped points of defeat.

We need a big performance now to beat Fulham.
