I like the Germans. I've been all over Germany and I've met with nothing but kindness and friendship.
A little story for you. My father hated the Germans. Absolutely HATED them; he made Basil Fawlty look like Ken Clarke. If we were out and he saw a car with a German plates and a 'D' on the back he'd sneer and say "Huh, bet you wish you were driving a Panzer through our streets instead don't you?" When I asked him why he hated them he used to say "They spent six years trying to kill me why should I like them?" If someone said "Well didn't you spend six years trying to kill them?" he'd reply, "No! I only spent four years trying to kill them, I still owe them two years."
When he got re-married in 1971 his new wife decided she'd better do something about this, so they went on a three week touring holiday round Germany. Well, talk about a conversion: "Germans? Best people in the world after the British. They just had a funny five minutes that was all." He even slightly regretted the course of World War Two: "At the end of 1940 it was obvious that they weren't going to beat us and we weren't going to beat them. We should have made peace with them and then both of us should have attacked the Russians. The Americans would have joined in and we could have wiped communism off the face of the earth."
Ah. I miss his saloon bar solutions to world problems. But if he can go from hating the Germans to liking them then anyone can.
I enjoyed reading that story.
The German's are class, great people and great country. Any techno-heads reading, go to Fusion festival North of Berlin. Best festival you'll ever go to.
